We had the good fortune of connecting with Kenisha Edwards and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kenisha, how do you think about risk?
Taking risks is always scary but definitely necessary for my growth. I am now a self-sufficient business owner due to taking risks and betting on myself.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I have a non-profit (EXPOSED) but I really want to shed light on my Day Care “Little Thinkers”. I opened Little Thinkers on February 25th, 2019. It’s a Family Home Day Care located in the City of Compton. I started my Day Care to carry on my mother’s legacy of serving the community. We mainly serve low-income families and Foster parents. I have over 13 years of experience teaching for the Los Angeles Unified School District, but in the beginning it was very difficult to create a daily agenda for the kids. Working with toddlers and babies is definitely a big adjustment and I had to learn how to maneuver. Since the pandemic hit, we now have school age children and lots of new operation regulations. I definitely experienced the obstacles of being a new business, but operating during Covid has been challenging to say the least. When quarantine initially started in March most of our parents kept their children home which affected my income tremendously. We remained open with only 2 kids until our enrollment started increasing after 3 months. Little Thinkers has only been open for a year and half and I’m proud of the structure and stability we’ve been able to provide for our kids especially during this unpredictable time. I’m also very proud that I provide internships to students who are aspiring to be teachers, therapist, and social workers through my partnership with the Child Development Program at Cal State Dominguez Hills.
