We had the good fortune of connecting with Steffanie Siebrand and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Steffanie, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
My (now) husband and I were working for an upstart cable network called TFN, The Football Network during the dot com boom. We thought we were going to get rich from the stock we were earning but ultimately the network never really took off.  However, along the way we had created a mini editing business within the network to earn money for the company instead of solely relying on investors’ money.  During a transition period with the network, we were given the opportunity to work-for-trade to own the equipment and client base we had built.  We had two weekends to convert our garage into a studio, and then voila! We were small business owners!  The Football Network didn’t survive, but StormMaker Productions, Inc is about ready to celebrate 20 years in business.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
We have learned that being able to diversify with the areas in which we create content has been our key to longevity. For some people/companies, their success has been to find a specific niche. For us, we have the motto, “If it can be visually communicated, we can do it!” We create content in EVERY field: medical, marketing, hotels, wineries, entertainment, legal, political, etc. The list goes on and on. The major lesson we have learned: Don’t rely on one big client that provides a ton of projects, because in a blink of an eye, said client could be gone. Instead, give a ton of attention to said big client, but keep marketing so that you have many consistent clients at any given time. Easier said than done, but its vital to sustainability.

Any great local spots you’d like to shoutout?
We live in Los Angeles (and when its not the apocalypse) this city has something to offer for everyone. It’s fun to use my entertainment connections and take out-of-town friends to live tapings of their favorite shows. For those in love with shopping, Beverly Hills is the spot. I really like to eat there too. But quite frankly, with so many different cultures living in one city, the food in LA is pretty much amazing everywhere.  Now, even though there are great beaches in Los Angeles, I grew up in San Diego and Mission Beach is my favorite. It’s my home away from home, so I would definitely take my out-of-state friends down there and stay a few days.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to dedicate this to all of our consistent clients throughout the 20 years we have owned our production company.  But most importantly, I want to send a major shoutout to my husband and business partner, Jason Wissinger.  Getting to raise a family together AND work on creative endeavors is the best.  I feel very lucky!
