We had the good fortune of connecting with Kennedy Cook and Megan Scherrman and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kennedy, Megan, maybe we can start at the very start – the idea – how did you come up with the idea for your business?
Believe it or not, starting our cookie company was a complete accident. For the last 3 years prior to Covid, I had been traveling for work across the United States, and at one point was living in Ireland. When the pandemic happened, traveling for work came to an end and I began working from home. As someone who is use to living out of hotel rooms during the week and finally being home was foreign to me, I started baking cookies as a fun hobby to kill time at night. I posted them on my personal Instagram page and all of my friends were begging to try them. I created the Kenz Kookiez Instagram page thinking nothing of it, posting pictures of cookies with no intention to sell them. All of a sudden, the demand was more than I could handle. My business partner, Megan Scherrman, was the perfect person to ask to join this crazy journey with me. She is one of the most creative people that I know- and is spot on when creating flavor profiles and what would work best together. After that, the Kenz Kookiez team was born! We were making cookie dough for 15+ hours a day and baking out of our personal home kitchens. We were taking orders through Instagram, and hand delivering them in our cars all over Miami. At one point, we were driving 1 hour away to Fort Lauderdale to work out of our friends restaurant that was temporarily closed down due to Covid. After a while, it was obvious that we were growing out of it and we had to move into a professional, commercial kitchen. May 2021 is our 1 year anniversary that we have been in business. We have sold over 40,000 cookies to date all through social media. It seems surreal that the company has grown this much in such a short amount of time. We can’t wait to see what happens as we continue to grow!
What should our readers know about your business?
Getting to where we are now was anything but easy. There have been constant lessons-learned, trial and error, and hiccups along the way. Any challenges we face we view as lessons-learned versus failures. Because next time it happens, we know we are going to persevere and be better. What sets us apart is that we are authentically ourselves. We do not try to be someone else or someone else’s brand- everything we make is original and our own, coming from our own visions and ideas. We’re both fun and quirky girls- I think that comes out and you can sense it in our Instagram. We’re just real, relatable, normal people. I think it’s refreshing to our customers to see that. We also pride ourselves in having the best customer service and if something goes wrong, always making it right! What we are most proud of is that the growth of Kenz Kookiez has been completely authentic and organic. The product speaks for itself- we believe our cookies are the very best. Within the last year, we have a 39% returning customer rate, which is something truly to be proud of.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Wow, where to start? We both live in Miami Beach, Florida. One of our favorite spots in South Beach is South Pointe Park. It’s a beautiful outdoor park that is right on the water with a boardwalk. You can see all the yachts in the marina, a view of Downtown, Fisher Island across the water, the cruise ships driving by during sunset, and you are able to walk to the beach. Going to Joe’s Take Away and getting stone crab claws, lobster rolls, and street corn is a must. You can take your order to-go and have a cute little picnic in the park on the water. Smith and Wollensky is feet away, and they have tables and an outdoor bar that you can enjoy cocktails at. Truly the perfect afternoon. Another favorite is Monty’s in South Beach. It is located right next to the Miami Beach Marina and is the perfect place to watch the sunset, enjoy delicious food, and watch all the boats pass by. A favorite hang out spot on the weekends is Soho Beach House, where you can go to their rooftop pool on the 8th floor and enjoy a Dirty Burger and Picante. You can’t go wrong. Going to The Standard and enjoying their pool and cocktails is also a favorite. It is right on the water with some of the best views of the city. If we were to choose one of our favorite dinner spots, it would be Jaya at the Setai and Mila. The food and the vibe are very Miami. If you’re visiting, put both of these on your ‘must go to’ spots.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
We would not be here today without the support of our friends and family. We have received orders from people that I went to Elementary school with, and also people that Megan went to middle school with in Chicago. These are people that we haven’t spoken to or seen in over 20 years. It’s crazy that after all this time, people can still be connected and supporting the people they grew up with. Our families have been our backbone and voice of reason during the growth of our company. Specifically, my boyfriend Sam has been my rock with all of this. He is the first person to come help Megan and I when we have large orders and never complains once. I am forever grateful for his continuous support and encouragement.
