We had the good fortune of connecting with Kenny Tomlin and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kenny, let’s talk legacy – what do you want yours to be?
I want my legacy to be that I lived my life with truth and heart fulling God’s purpose for me being here. I want people to remember that I always loved helping people and I have music that will outlive me. I’ve been blessed with songs that bring people closer to God. I came from St Louis when I was 20 years old and I have made a living playing music ever since. I am now 60 years old and I love the life God has blessed me with.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’ve been writing songs and playing bass in many bands for years. I always used to write songs hoping other people would sing my songs but people often said I should sing my own songs. As a full-time musician, you will face more struggles including financial than you can ever imagine. My faith in God is what keeps me going while pursuing my music career. I’ve learned to keep God first and that everything that looks good is not always good for you. I write songs with positive messages which lead them closer to God, whether it’s R&B or Gospel music. My motto is Real Music for Change.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
For me, anyone that comes to visit me will always end up in the studio and other entertainment venues so they can check out the local bands.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to recognize Spud E Taylor for getting me started by teaching me how to be a skilled bass player and how to write songs. He is one of the best of God’s creations. Spud’s personal style has always been classy and that’s what I still strive for in my music today. I would also like to give a shout-out to the music group Flight that bedazzled the Inland Empire in the early 1980s which taught me about being a clean-cut entertainer with good morals. I’d also like to give a shout-out to an awesome saxophone player and musician named Howard Alston and to all of the phenomenal musicians I have performed with throughout my career. I want to give a special shout-out to my best friend Reginald Siler who’s always been there for me whether it was singing, musical collaborations, or fixing my cars for free.
