We had the good fortune of connecting with Kenzie K. Goff and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kenzie K., have you ever found yourself in a spot where you had to decide whether to give up or keep going? How did you make the choice?
I love this question because I don’t believe that “giving up” has to look like how it’s typically seen. I graduated from art school as a specialist in storyboard for animation in the Bay area in May of 2020 – right in the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic. Dream internships I had lined up for the summer of 2020 dried up and my plans of moving across the country for my internship disappeared to quarantine. Instead of rocking the LA life I had planned, I was stuck in my teenage bedroom at my mother’s house of suburban northern California. In that time, I applied for creative work in my specialty constantly and considered giving up my dreams many a time. However, as time went on, life threw me in some different roles. I was lucky enough to be connected with clients through college peers and work was redefined for me – since 2020, I have built a career that looks a little different than I intended. I was able to use my drawing and story-telling skills to create draft comics for a major public health organization, design characters for a video game aimed to for a middle-grade demographic, and create stickers and merchandise for fundraising, I even currently work as a 3D imagery analyst for a major tech corporation. I still storyboards (and still intend to work in a major studio someday), but right now, I’m pursuing an entrepreneurial role and am building a business surrounding my online web-comic. We don’t ever have to “give up” – we creatives and entrepreneurs can be many people in our lives. When you are open to opportunity, you are open to maturing your skillsets and utilizing it in many different ways. I am still a storyboard artist, but I am also a comic artist, an illustrator, a data imagery analyst, a writer, an entrepreneur, and a director. You never have to give up – you can be who you want to be or meant to be right now. There’s no deadline on dreams!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I currently live in midtown Sacramento, but will be moving to the LA area at the start of the new year! I absolutely loved my time here in Sacramento and have invited many a friend to explore the town with me! When I had my roommates from college visit for a weekend, we got up early to get breakfast at the Morning Fork on 21st street. We then spent the afternoon at the Crocker Art Museum before getting a late lunch in Old Sacramento. We finished off the day with some beers and German snacks at Biergarten off of K St. and a late night drag show at The Colonial Theater. The bar and food scene in Sacramento is absolutely amazing and if you’re ever in town, I highly recommend checking out K and 24th, any night of the week!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would love to shoutout the entire Shrunkenheadman community. Without this vibrant community of artists coming from the San Jose State University animation program, so much of this world wouldn’t have the wonderful stories we see in media today. I have never encountered a more loving, open, and supportive community than this one and I owe my success to the support and teachings of the faculty members and countless friends I have made. I would also love to shoutout fellow artists Anne Maslen (@annemaslen), Letianna Castellano (@leti_castle), Kyler Okamura (@ramham_) and Christina Fidler (@schwiftybits). Not only are they some of my favorite people I have ever collaborated with, but they are some of the most wonderful, supportive, and talented artists I have ever met. If you’re looking to hire anyone, hire them!
