We had the good fortune of connecting with Keon Brunson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Keon, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
At the age of 14, entrepreneurship wasn’t initially thought of. I knew that I had a gift, and I was motivated by the pioneers ahead of me and whatever success they had, I strived for. It wasn’t until I moved to Atlanta, Ga, from South Carolina in 2007 that I truly understood the potential of success as a hairstylist. Since then, 20+ years in the game. I’ve strived to be the best business professional I could be, and it gets better as the years go by.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
What I love about my job is that I serve multiple women daily, providing them with excellent service while boosting their self-esteem from my hands to their crown. I’ve learned multiple things throughout my career, most of which came with obstacles I was fortunate to overcome. One thing about challenges: I’ve always been the one to work through them. Never deterred or afraid, I’m the best with mistakes. I either make them work in my favor or learn from them and try not to make the same twice. One thing is for sure: mistake, misplaced, late, or denied; I will try it again or until I perfect it. Another thing that curated my existence as a hairstylist was/is working in a salon atmosphere where my peers constantly challenged me and where, ultimately, I was engaged in total creativity, even if it wasn’t coming from my hands. I know most stylists go into the industry wanting to become the best celebrity hairstylist. But I’m so grateful that the clientele that has sustained me for 20+ years is the everyday successful working business woman, housewife, their daughters, and black women. These are my celebrities.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Los Angeles is a beautiful place (the reason why I moved here), and there is so much to explore. From the beaches and dining to brunch and parties, your fun times in LA will be endless. Bestia in the Arts District is top-tier if you love Italian (chefs kiss). Not too far away in downtown, a high-traffic spot great for people watching, good bites & cocktails, and a great place to be is JOEY DTLA. In Beverly Hills, you have Crustceans, AVRA (Pre Fixe $38 Three-Course Menu Daily Brunch 11:30 am-4 pm), & The Rooftop Beverly Hills at the Waldorf Astoria (one of the best views in the city). In West Hollywood, Ysabel is an excellent place for Sunday brunch. Moving across the hill in Burbank, you can’t go wrong with dinner or brunch at Castaway. The best seafood you will find in Long Beach. I could share many places, but I blessed you with some of my favorite eats.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
First, I must thank my mother, Melba, for teaching me how to braid. I wouldn’t be who I am today if it weren’t for her. Fran & Chris Battle were the two that got me into the professional hair industry. They own Personal Touch Beauty & Barber College in my hometown in Kingstree, SC, allowing me to come and pay off my education over time when I couldn’t afford it. Dwight Eubanks of Purple Door Salon in Atlanta was the first hairstylist to show me how successful I could become. Tanisha Cassidine for opening her doors to someone she didn’t know so that I could go to a place I was unfamiliar with to pursue my dreams. Jason Scott for allowing me to assist him for 1+ years to hone my craft and become a great friend. Last, I thank Lawernce Washington for taking me under his wing, his protege, and my mentor. He took the time for years to mold me into the hairstylist I am today, and I’m forever grateful.
