We had the good fortune of connecting with Kheris Rogers and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kheris, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I started my apparel brand and viral movement Flexin’ In My Complexion after being bullied in school for my dark skin tone and kinky hair. My intent of creating this brand was to inspire people to love themselves through fashion.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
What sets my clothing brand a part from other brands is our intent to instill messages of self worth into others. Our shirts have powerful messages like “Representation Matters”, “Black Women Matter” and “Flexin’ In My Complexion.”

It wasn’t easy starting this brand, especially since I was only 10 years old when I started it. I felt like people underestimated me because of my age even though I was making 6 figures annually. However, I have learned to trust my intuition and to chase my dreams regardless of what others link. This led to me being the youngest designer to ever showcase at New York Fashion Week.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If I was to show someone around LA, I would mix tourist spots with spots that only people from LA may only know about. For tourist attractions I would of course take them to the Hollywood Walk of Fame, to see the Hollywood sign, and the Santa Monica Pier. For food, I would take them to The District by GS, Hungry Joes Jamaican Food, or to brunch at Court Cafe.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I dedicate my shoutout to my mom and older sister for always encouraging me to be the best me that I could be.
