We had the good fortune of connecting with Kristina Urribarres and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kristina, every day, we about how much execution matters, but we think ideas matter as well. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
My first social media platform was YouTube. I began posting makeup tutorials and fashion try-on hauls with no prior experience of filming or editing, before YouTube was monetizable. I simply enjoyed the process. I liked that I could post videos and reach people all over the world, interact with them in the comments and find out the kind of content they like. I was inspired by other makeup vloggers on YouTube that I enjoyed watching (Michelle Phan, Blair Fowler and Fleur De La Force). I did not have an exact strategy. I thought, “if others could do this, why can’t I?” and simply went for it, learning how to edit and post along the way. Just got for it! Don’t wait.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
When it comes to dance fitness, I love mixing different styles and creating a unique workout dance routine. For example, I can use a song that has both techno and bachata, then use it to create original routines that are both fun and effective. I have a few dance fitness routines on the app TurboFit, on which I am one of 12 instructors. I also love teaching dance fitness in person and making everyone feel comfortable. When someone is unsure whether they should join a dance fitness class, I love to encourage them! I also read the room and see my audience and adjust my routine accordingly, whether I include more dance vs fitness moves, or make the routines easy vs hard to follow.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If I had a friend visit me in LA, I would show them both the famous landmarks and local favorites. I would take them on a hiking trail to Runyon Canyon, to see the Hollywood sign, the Santa Monica peer, a Warner Brothers Studios tour, as well as some simple spots where movies were filmed (like the Liquor Store in North Hollywood where Cher form Clueless was robbed). And I would show them some local food favorites, like 3rd Base Sports Restaurant & Bar in Hollywood, the Highlight Room rooftop during the day (great photo op) and Beauty & Essex at night (next to the OMG sign, which is another great photo op).
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My mom! She has supported my social media journey since the very beginning, back in 2010 when we lived in Virginia and nobody there filmed or knew what social media would be able to do for us all in the future. I graduated college, but I did not follow the route that it could taken me. And I was never pressured to follow any certain path, which I am grateful for. There are others who aren’t so lucky and are forced to follow careers that they don’t enjoy, simply to appease their parents or loved ones. My mom has always supported my passions and stood by me in all my endeavors!
