Meet Kurt Quinn: Actor, Writer, Animator

We had the good fortune of connecting with Kurt Quinn and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kurt, do you disagree with some advice that is more or less universally accepted?
Young people who are training to be artists are often told by their teachers “Life as an artist is hard. If you can do anything else, do that”. Ridiculous. Of course I could do other things. Everyone can do many many things. Everyone will do many different things in their lives.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My formal training is in theater. I’ve made a good living acting in commercials, tv, film, and theater for nigh on a decade. In the last handful of years, my acting career has funded my animation habit and in the last three years, I’ve worked as a freelance animator in addition to acting.
I think a lot of people would like to act or animate or pursue any creative career, but the time commitment and uncertainty turns them away. It takes a long-ass time to animate anything, but that’s what I really love about it. I’ve always enjoyed playing the long game.
The path to calling myself an Actor/Writer/Animator has been long and wonderful and scary and weird and neato. I think that life is going to be an ordeal no matter what path you choose. Might as well make it a path that you find interesting.
I think that what makes my animation special is that I do everything. I write, direct, perform, animate, and sound design. I’m not world-class at any of those things. Not by a long shot. But I think the fact that it all comes from one brain makes it specific and unique. And for some reason that works.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
1. The Groundlings Theater on Melrose. The O.G. sketch comedy spot in LA. I’m biased as I’ve studied there for years and recently joined the Sunday Company. But it really is the best sketch comedy in the milky way.
2. The Reel Inn. Amazing old seafood joint on the PCH. Killer chowder.
3. Tony’s Darts Away. Best craft beer bar in LA.
4. Secret concrete skateboarding ditch in Griffith. If you skateboard, rip it up. If not, have a picnic under the giant oaks and watch the skaters shred. Google Maps coordinates: 34.14691869368788, -118.29666797446141
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
