We had the good fortune of connecting with Dr. Zelina Medina and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dr. Zelina, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
When I discovered the healing power of acupuncture through my own healing journey, I was convinced that I had to share this medicine with the world. I felt it was my calling. I enrolled into acupuncture school not long afterwards and I felt passionate about sharing not only the medicine, but also my story to uplift and inspire others on their own healing journeys. I had some business background and I’ve always had an entrepreneurial spirit, even as a kid, so I was confident that this was my path. There have been many learning opportunities along the road, but every day I am so grateful to be living now, the dreams I had years before. When I work with someone and they are able to feel better about themselves, it’s completely priceless. It is an honor.

Please tell us more about your career. We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about. How did you get to where you are today professionally. Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges? What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way. What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
I feel that my patients and clients connect with me as someone that has been in their shoes. For me, my work is very personal and I have a huge passion to help others get out of the dark places that I’ve been in. I’m most proud and excited when my patients start to notice changes, or reach huge milestones along the way. It is an absolute honor. I had a patient battle life long acne and now has clear skin. It is deeply moving to witness them being able to be happy with themselves. I feel that I have been determined to remember why I started this work and to continue doing it with integrity and with what feels right for my soul, I feel that translates into my work and has helped me reach and empower others. This is why I continue. Some of my challenges have been mostly my own self-doubts, and I constantly am working on self realization and reaching higher levels of awareness. I constantly remind myself that everything always has a solution, no matter how big the challenge. I adapt. I want to world to know that I am here to hold space and witness you in your own journeys and to provide guidance, support and inspiration along the way.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would definitely take them to the beach and nature hikes, those are my favorite things to do. We would check out Santa Monica, Venice, Point Dume, Laguna Beach, Temescal Canyon, Debs Park, Descanso Gardens, the Arboretum. And maybe take a night ride on bikes through Downtown LA, those were fun! I would take them to eat the best tacos ever to Cinco Puntos in BH, the best mariscos to Via Mar in Highland Park and a nice dinner to Yamashiro in Hollywood, oh and drinks at Las Perlas (if this was pre-covid) in DTLA.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I could never be doing the important work I do without meeting all the wonderful healers that were part of my journey: Michael Fox, Licensed Acupuncturist – He was my introduction to acupuncture and ended up being one of my professors Amanda Howell, Herbalist – She was my employer and believed in me so much and motivated me to keep going in my program SCUHS Faculty and Staff – for providing such an educationally rich learning environment that pushed me out of my comfort zone, and for providing support as I battled with my health issues at the same time Emperors College of Traditional Oriental Medicine – for providing the best integrative doctoral program available and the support needed to complete my doctorate while also becoming a mom at the same time! Parents and Family – for believing in me and my wild dreams, and helping whenever I needed it My very small circle of friends for still being there, despite my disappearance to the depths of grad school and then mom life, you are appreciated Armando – my daughter’s father and the catalyst for my ancestral healing journey The healers I worked with along the way as part of my own healing process, as I needed to heal while I also became a healer myself.
