We had the good fortune of connecting with Kyanna Alexandra and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kyanna, why did you pursue a creative career?
One of the main reasons I decided to pursue a creative career was because I got tired of the mundane 9-5 lifestyle. I realized I wasn’t fulfilled in anything or any job after college, and I knew something was missing from my life. But also, during this time, I didn’t particularly appreciate taking orders from anyone. I never liked the idea that I was helping someone else build their dream/further their company, and I wasn’t using that time to help myself or my dreams.

As time passed, I knew I wanted to be a content creator. I’ve seen glimpses of people living a lifestyle that relied on their authentic lives while building a career and business. So I asked myself what am I passionate about and what topics I could talk about for hours and hours without getting bored or feeling like I was running out of ideas.

Within those conversations with myself, I knew I was going to jump into content creation. I’ve tried twice before taking it seriously a third time and knew I needed to be consistent with my craft. I saw the opportunities and doors it opened for others and knew it could do the same for me.

To talk about topics that I genuinely enjoy, to make my own hours, establish my own connections within my communities and pretty much do whatever I want, and whatever I feel it’s best to suit my brand/business is something that I thoroughly enjoy. Not being restricted to someone else’s ideas and being able to do what’s best for me is why I pursued a creative career.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Well, to put it, I am a content creator, but in its complexity, I am everything. I am the creative director, the editor, the visionary, the liaison, and the point of contact; I’m a one-woman team getting it done. But in the depth of being a content creator, I create videos/photos/blog posts about being a queer and plus-size woman while showcasing my life as I deem fit.

I wouldn’t say this road was difficult, but not easy either. When I started creating content, I only made content that revolved around the LGBTQ community as a queer woman. I recently came out to my mother, dated a woman, lost my family because of that, and broke up with my girlfriend all in a year.

That hardship inspired me to take content creation seriously again and pick up my camera. But as time passed, I realized I was more than just a queer woman. I knew I needed to expand and talk about things that mattered to me/what I felt like I would indeed fall in love with. I am queer, but that’s me, not a tangible thing I thought I could offer to the world.

That’s when I decided to expand on my love for fashion or “putting an outfit together,”, especially for women who either 1) struggle with feeling confident in their bodies or 2) need a place to come and find outfit inspiration. This newfound niche allowed me to not only dive into something I felt completely comfortable talking about but also opened up new opportunities for me.

Starting out creating content for the LGBTQ community and then adding the fashion niche into my brand scared me because I knew it wasn’t what my followers came to see, it wasn’t what they originally signed up for, but I knew I needed to add something to my band because I knew I didn’t solely want to be an LGBTQ creator, I wanted to add something else that made sense to me and in the long run, make sense to the people coming to subscribe to my pages as well.

But throughout all this, I learned that getting stuck in one place is easy and that if you need a chance, don’t be afraid to. If something doesn’t feel right, determine what it is and rectify it. I believe we constantly get caught up in what we think is the only way to do something, not remembering that there are many different paths to get to the same destination.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my best friend were visiting for a week in LA, I would start by taking them to the Santa Monica pier so we could play on the boardwalk and chill out by the beach to enjoy the sun and the wave. Then, throughout the week, I would make sure that we would stop by multiple restaurants such as Cabo Cantina on Hollywood, Nobu in Malibu, Catch, STK Steakhouse, The Griddle Cafe, and Two Hand Hotdogs in Koreatown.

And at night, we’ll be all over West Hollywood partying and bar hopping in and out of clubs, dancing at Beaches, and grabbing some late-night food from the Taco Stands that usually sit outside waiting for hungry partygoers. Or head to downtown LA and party the night away there.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Throughout my life, I’ve always felt like I’ve been on my own. My goals and ambitions differ from what people are used to, and most don’t understand or don’t know how to help/encourage the lifestyle of a content creator.

Thankfully, I can count on my friends Josette, Kayleigh, and Shawntay to keep me afloat and provide me with ideas or words of affirmation when it comes to pouring back into me. And of course, I can’t forget to thank my boyfriend Avelino, who has been there day in and day out, letting me know not to quit, even when it gets tough or even when I feel like I don’t see improvement in myself or my content. He’s very good at keeping my spirits high and my attitude positive regarding content creation because it can be a lonely road sometimes.

Also, Shonda Rhimes’s book “Year of Yes,” is one that changed my life. In reading this book, I knew that I needed to step out of my comfort zone, expand myself, and stop saying No to things that scared me. In reading this book, Shonda expressed that she started saying “Yes” to opportunities that came her way, and it changed her life tremendously and tried to look at the glass as half full and not half empty. Without this book, I wouldn’t have taken the leap to start creating content again and wouldn’t have moved to Los Angeles.
