We had the good fortune of connecting with Laila Marshall and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Laila, what role has risk played in your life or career?
When the risk is measured correctly, I think taking risks is great. I have always taken risks because without risk there isn’t any reward. Risk also centers around believing in yourself. If you know that you will be okay, why not take the risk? I am not saying take completely blind risk, but if you weigh the pros and cons and see it is worth it, do it. You will often surprise yourself and rise to the occasion.
Beebizy was a risk to start because of my lack of experience at the time. However, I believed in myself and knew that I would figure it out. I also think that everyone feels fear to take risk, but one thing that I promised to myself is I will not let fear guide my life. I lean into the fear because once I break through it, I know that I am more capable than I thought. That mindset has helped me take more risks.
What should our readers know about your business?
Beebizy is an online platform that connects freelancers with clients. We specialize in events and moms! I started the app as a frustrated consumer wishing for an app like this. I was pregnant and knew I would have little time and needed a quick way to find great talent such as the cake artist, entertainment with upfront pricing and reviews. Moms love recommendations, so this is the app for your mom friends. We also do not make money until the freelancer does. So it’s really a win win. We have an amazing community of freelancers and clients that love the mission of the app.
There are always challenges when starting a business. I have no technical background in terms of engineering. I had a vision and knew it would help so many people. My goal was to build a company that would help millions of people. I wanted a place that would empower people to live better lives. With that being said, it was certainly a lot of trial and error and a lot of patience. The first app iteration we built was nowhere near where it is today. It was far less developed, so it evolved with me. I had to learn patience and perseverance will get you to your goal. It is also critical to have an amazing team. I wouldn’t be where I am today without my team. We have a really open work environment where tough feedback is okay. We ultimately want the best product, all egos to the side.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I love this question! First I would take them to the best restaurant for breakfast in the San Fernando valley called More than Waffles. Get the mediterranean omelette it’s amazing! Then we would head to the beach. Los Angeles has the best weather and beautiful beaches. For dinner I would probably take her to Nobu, my favorite sushi restaurant. I would definitely take her to Disneyland for the day, its the happiest place on earth! The smells, rides and food is SO good. I would also take them to LACMA, its a great museum in Los Angeles. LACMA is close to the Grove which is a great place to eat and walk around to shop. There are great stores and a fun candy store. Lastly, I would take her on a hike through different areas of Los Angeles. We have the most beautiful mountains and hiking trails. Clearly I am a fan of Los Angeles!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I wouldn’t be where I am today without my husband, my kids and my parents. It’s critical to have a strong support system around you when you have those moments where you want to give up. I also see Warren Buffett and Sara Blakely as mentors because of their incredible decision making skills and strong moral compasses. My favorite book is “Start with Why” by Simon Sinek. Beebizy was founded on our why. We wanted to create a platform that empowers and supports people in living their best lives. I also have been extremely lucky to have the best brother and sister and best friends. They remind me to not give up which is the key to succeeding. It’s easy to give up but what happens if you stick with it? You usually will accomplish what you set out to do.
