We had the good fortune of connecting with Laura Stewart and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Laura, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I started freelancing in 2013 after I had my youngest child, Major. I had been working for the retailer “Anthropologie” creating their window and store displays but was wanting something more flexible so that I could be home with my family. My business grew very organically with the thought process of “I am doing what I love”. This place of gratitude helped me approach every project with curiosity and excitement. I like to be open and allow things to happen. Otherwise I would be limiting my work and my abilities. My approach is always “yes”. Even if I am asked to create something using a medium I have never worked with, I always say yes and figure it out as I go, it is my way of evolving my craft and my business. I thrive off of a challenge and exploring the unknown. It is a very experimental and playful process that opens a lot of doors for projects with a wide variety of clients. The ethos of my company is truly all about connection. Connection to community, to other creatives, and to the self.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am a Visionary Artist based in Los Angeles, CA. It is my intention to bring truth, beauty, and goodness to everything in my life, especially my art. I create three-dimensional works that are often site specific, and designed to transform the perception of space. My work incorporates a broad range of natural materials and is often commission based and one of a kind. I like to work in large scale, so you will most likely see my pieces installed in public spaces like hotels, restaurants, and at brand events. I have been creating ever since I can remember and grew up in a home where we made everything from Halloween costumes to soccer banners. If I wanted something, my best bet was to make it myself! This led to a few failures, a blown up microwave, and a bedroom on fire. It makes me laugh to think about all of the weird things that I made growing up, but I see that same ingenuity continue to be a driving force behind my work today. I recently expanded my business to “Unseen Forces Creative’ a Visual Arts Collective expressing oneness with all through the powers within. Our mission is to end separation through the experience and expression of art. We are a multi-faceted creative studio transforming environments and storytelling through a new perspective. Specializing in custom artworks, large scale installations, and flower alchemy. I have built an amazing team of women and cannot wait to see how this journey unfolds.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I call this weekend, The West Coast Glow Up. This is a true story and itinerary that I put together for my best friend who was visiting from New York. Yoga in the morning followed by brunch with the girls at a local plant based shop, Joi Cafe. Hit up the dispensary, then Erewhon for smoothies and beach snacks. Drive through Topanga Canyon to the beach listening to a mixtape titled “6th Dimension”. Hang at the beach until sunset and then take an astrological sound bath at the Mindry in Malibu. The following day, museum hop around LA followed by a Harmonic Egg Session at Latitude 34 Degrees, and an Italian dinner at Casa Nostra. As you can see it is all about nourishing the mind, body, and spirit!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
This is dedicated to the explorers who journey through the unknown. To the creators who make the unseen seen. To the alchemists who transmute old energies into new. To the rebels who push the boundaries and break through barriers. To the mystics who see the infinite in all things. To the artists that came before me who inspired a new world with their vision and mastery.
