We had the good fortune of connecting with Lauren Collins and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Lauren, why did you pursue a creative career?
I became interested in art from a young age, particularly because of cartoons, but largely because of my grandparents. I was the sort of kid that you could set down in front of a tv and not worry about. My favorites were Disney movies and anything on Cartoon Network. I was a student in my grandma’s preschool class. At the time, I wasn’t really into art. I couldn’t color in the lines properly, my grandma really pushed me until I could. From there I just started really getting into it, drawing all the time, especially with my grandpa. He really enjoyed drawing portraits and landscapes. I really enjoyed emulating him and trying to draw better than him. It was fun! I kept pursuing art from there on.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’m a prop/character designer working in animation, currently at Nickelodeon on a dope show called “Middlemost Post”! I can’t say it was easy getting to where I am today. A lot of tears, hard work, self reflection and sacrifice was made. Growing up I was sold on the keen idea of the “life treadmill”; go to school, go to college, profit. As so many of us now know, it definitely don’t work like that! I really wanted to work in animation, went to school for it. I did some teaching for a couple of years after college and I worked in some pretty toxic environments. I wanted better for myself, so I really buckled down and got to where I am today. It’s been a bumpy road, but I feel I’m stronger for it!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Ooh, I’m a pretty new resident to the city, so I feel like I’m the best friend in this case! I don’t know a lot about LA yet, but Prospect Park in Redlands CA is pretty neat! It reminds me a lot of my high school town back in New Jersey. It’s very green and full of orange trees, I return there often.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I was raised by a big family in a little house, so I really owe my success to multiple people. I’ve also always been supported by my partner since the two of us were 13. So I dedicate this to the Collins Family Household, particularly Carrie May Collins. I miss you so much, grandma. And also Nickson Phosy, my life partner.
