We had the good fortune of connecting with Lauren D’Abate and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Lauren, do you have some perspective or insight you can share with us on the question of when someone should give up versus when they should keep going?
Maybe 6 months before the pandemic, I had a couple weeks where I was really worried about my music getting out there, thinking I wasn’t doing enough, or the right things, and it was really gnawing at me. One day, I got into a lyft, and the driver randomly started telling me about how he was in music for at least 20 years, and then he quit, but he realized that if he just had stayed with it, he would have made it. He literally said, “the only way to fail is to quit.” I hadn’t told him anything about myself. It felt like it was such a gift from the universe at a really critical time. It changed my whole perspective. Whenever I’m feeling down, I remember this story.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’m a singer and songwriter, focused on writing pop and EDM music. I’ve been a classical pianist my whole life, and it has been a journey going from classical, to more of an indie sound, to finally arriving at pop and EDM. For me, my biggest struggle has been figuring out what I want and what matters to me, and not focusing on what other people want for me. What matters to me is connecting to people on a deep level about our universal struggles through music.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
The Arts District is my favorite spot in LA. I always love starting with coffee from Verve, then hitting brunch at Zinc, walking to the gallery space at Hauser + Wirth, and hitting the bookstores on the way, Hennessy & Ingalls and Artbook. Then (after a nap), we finish up with dinner and a tour at Lost Spirits Distillery in the Arts District. Their Willy Wonka style tour is so unique, and there’s the benefit of award winning booze and incredible food at their restaurant, Fish or Flesh. Until their Los Angeles location opens back up after the pandemic, I’ll have to visit them at their new location in Las Vegas.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My vocal coach, Teri Danz, has been such a positive voice in this process. She literally changed my voice and took me from amateur to pro. And, she worked with me on mindset too – always being a positive voice and showing me how to solve any issues that came across my path.
