We had the good fortune of connecting with Nazeema Ali Sims and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Nazeema Ali, any advice for those thinking about whether to keep going or to give up?
I’m not entirely sure how to explain it, but you just know. You never truly give up though. It’s more like whether you should keep going or go back to the drawing board.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I have been writing poetry since I was 16. I started because my best friend and other half, Bryce, was really into writing and suggested I try. My poetry is different from others’ because it captures a feeling. And no matter who you are, you can relate to the feeling. I don’t know many poets today who can write universal poems like that. That’s why I want the world to read my poems. Not for the fame, but so everyone can experience the emotions that come with reading them.

I can say it has always come naturally, but I suffer from intense writers block after finishing a poem. I don’t know if I’ll ever get out of that, but truthfully, I’m just here for the ride.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
The best spots are the food spots. I’d have to start our day with breakfast at Simply Wholesome. Then we’d go to Leimert Park and shop! Normally, I would suggest hanging out in the park, but ever since the city put that “anti-homeless” gate up it has been hard to get in and enjoy the culture. Anyways, shopping makes me hungry so I would suggest going to Dulan’s, Sachi, or Buffalo Spot for lunch. After lunch I’d want to take pictures. Baldwin Hills/Leimert Park has some of the BEST architecture and art so I would suggest taking pictures in these areas. That would pretty much be a full day for us. If we get hungry again we can always hit Sno Balls for a good funnel cake. Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Above all, my thanks goes out to the Universe. It is because the Universe has guided me and protected me that I am where I am today. Miya, Rell, Deonte, and my mom are my biggest physical supporters. They are always right behind me and always keep it real with me. However, on of the biggest motivations is my favorite book called “The Alchemist”. I read it back in the 9th grade and my first tattoo when I was 17 was a quote from it. The book always keeps me going and reminds me that my story is written, all I have to do is read it. Maktub
