We had the good fortune of connecting with LaVantae Johnson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi LaVantae, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I always had a passion in Film, my brother had me watching all type of movies such as sopranos, Harlem nights, Scarface, Face off etc and and Every time I watched a movie or TV show I always wondered “How did they make that? Was that effect real or fake” I always wanted to know what all went into creating a film.i was already working the camera at church and learning the ends and outs of a camera so I grabbed my moms camcorder on the weekends pulling all nighters doing short films with my friends and started doing commercials for my brother Brand Leaders. During that process both of my friends Darius and Jamiersen showed me that this is what I need to be doing and need to start focusing on creating a production business So I started out as “Think outside the box” because I was big on never being boxed in always believed in spreading your wings and expanding your vision. ending up changing the name to UnboxedThoughts Productions in 2015 because as I grew in film I realized your only limitation is your Imagination.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Right Now I am most proud of my collaboration with the Detroit Pistons and Leader Quality (Jamiersen) and FlintNow, we went back to Me and Jamiersen Hometown Flint, MI to do a Mural on a Basketball Court to give back to the community and the next generation after us, we released it on fathers day, The pistons mascot came out and played basketball with the kids and the whole event was free. that was something me and jamiersen talked about doing back in 2012 and 10 yrs later that vision came to life that was one of my proudest moments even my son got to see what his father created jus for kids like him to play basketball. where there’s unity there’s strength.
I get to where I am today is by never giving up, networking with others, not being afraid to ask questions about something I didn’t know, spending my free time studying, and going out shooting and working on my craft. working with different brands developing different editing styles, taking different roles on set such as lighting or audio so I can learn the ends and outs so when it comes to my creating my film I know how direct my crew in the future. spending hours researching and looking up different ways to achieve a certain look.
The Process wasn’t easy at all! I wanted to quit so many times lol but I had a mental support team that really pushed me to get back on track and take mental breaks. I did a lot of falling, I failed plenty of times but I never gave up, I got right back up and tried again and again.
The Lessons I learned on the way is YOUR GOING TO NEED PATIENCE lol, during times on set things are going to go according to plan but don’t dwell on whats going wrong find a way to get around it and keep going. its ok fail just long learn from your lessons and keep trying.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I Live in Vegas but I’m not really a club Person. but if you want some good music, a good chill spot, Nice Cigars I would take them to La Casa. but if you there for a week I would refer you to Lake Las Vegas Resort which is off by the water, you can get on a boat, jet skies, paddle boat and good restaurants on the resort. there’s always the strip if you want to hit the casinos.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There’s a lot of people who deserves credit but I really want to give credit to my Mother, Jamiersen, Darius, Kevon, Sierra, My Son and Leader Quality. Each One of these individuals really pushed me everyday even when things got hard, they motivated me to keep going they showed why I showed keep going, Gave me opportunities to show my skills they never gave up on me.
