We had the good fortune of connecting with Leslie Karpman and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Leslie, every day, we about how much execution matters, but we think ideas matter as well. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
I had been a personal trainer and pilates instructor since 2008, and in that time dedicated to my amazing community, and taught over 15,000 classes! The idea for Body By Leslie came to me when I had been really feeling this strong desire to bring people together in a way that felt like a huge celebration, but I felt boxed in by the limited capacity in studios. A lot of people don’t like to workout because it feels like a punishment, it’s not fun. So with Body By Leslie, what I do is create this really addictive, fun environment with my method that’s highly focused on toning, really in an inclusive, kinda flirty environment. I started pop-ups of my Signature classes at big dance studios in The Sweat Spot in Silver Lake and 3rd Street Dance in LA, and wherever we were, it felt like a movement! I quickly pivoted with the times, and launched the BBL Virtual Studio, which was a saving grace to me and my community over the course of these past few years. Creating online access has been so incredible in the capacity to work with the family and friends of my clients who don’t live in LA, my Instagram followers, and international clients that are live-streaming from across the world. This reach has been the greatest gift in my life as an entrepreneur. Beyond livestream and on demand classes, the BBL Online Studio has also given me a platform to bring my fitness & nutrition plans with accountability, guides, challenges, and so much more globally! I designed the BBL Equipment Kit with everything you need to create the resistance and balance training for my Signature Classes. The BBL Kit makes it possible to do the workout we do on the pilates machine, anytime anywhere.
What should our readers know about your business?
Body By Leslie is a ritual. Committing to my VIP is like being a part of a tribe that is so intimately connected. The feedback I get is that people feel invincible after my classes, sexy in our bodies, happy, and that I’m the person keeping them sane. The mind/body connection is so at the center, as is my mission to show people that you don’t have to do hours of cardio or dieting to feel and look amazing. When I created Body By Leslie, I knew I wanted to always keep the body guessing, so no two classes are the same, yet each is entertaining, and leaves you wanting more. You actually crave the workout! And same applies for nutrition. My favorite thing to get really micro with clients’ nutrition, and delve into your history, the way you’re living now, your self love practices, and what you envision, and find the new way that makes that your new reality. Each person has a unique biochemistry, values, preferences. and it starts from looking into your habits, patterns, what is serving you and what is dragging you down, and taking that awareness to make change. It’s amazing how much what we consume, and the way we move our bodies every affects our entire existence. I knew from the beginning that accountability has to be and stay at the center. I knew I wanted to create a space for everyone to come together, so no matter what’s going on outside, we get to come together in this special place to grow and to revive our bodies, our minds, and our hearts. The challenge to translate this virtually has felt pretty radical to me. I’m most excited about the ability to reach people globally with my virtual platform, and building an empire to change lives worldwide. I got to where I am by knowing my worth and charging for it, believing in myself and my mission, starting when I didn’t have all the answers, and prioritizing creativity, wellness, and relationships above all else. One of the things I’ve learned along the way is that when an out of the box ideas pop into my mind, bring that to life. I had an idea for a Wild Wednesdays Quickie Series of classes, and my community was so open to jumping in. Also people love themed classes, anything you can do as a creator to make the workouts fun AF is a hard yes. What I want the world to know about me, my brand, and my story is that I see fitness as life force. I have learned to be my own biggest cheerleader, and it is my purpose to give this back to others. I know that we can all rise from pain and wakeup in a healthy thriving body filled with gratitude.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Born and raised in LA, I feel like I know all the inside secrets on this one. Definitely we’d go to all my favorite hikes – Runyon, Griffith, Temescal, Fryman, Kreation, spend a the day in Malibu, Moonshadows or Paradise Cove, El Matador for sunset. Dinner at Gracias Madres. Best Sushi is hands-down Iroha in the valley. Sunday Farmer’s Market on Melrose, shopping on Melrose, and Abbot Kinney. The Getty, Erewhon and the Grove if there’s time.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I love all of Joe Dispenza’s work, especially Evolve Your Brain. Fitness is so mental, and the information in his books goes so in depth the chemical response between our thought patterns and feelings, the habits we create, and how to stay in the positive. Studying brain science has had so much influence in how I play hype girl to keep our heads in the game!
