We had the good fortune of connecting with Lexie Skye and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Lexie, what is the most important factor behind your success?
The most important factor behind all of this is true passion. I started posting online because I genuinely wanted to share my love for music with the rest of the world in anyway I could. It was never about the numbers of views, likes, or followers to me, that’s not success. Reaching out and truly connecting with people, even just one person, that’s success to me. Being able to use social media as an outlet for my passions has been so beyond meaningful. It’s led me to form such real and strong bonds with so many others who share that same love. I’ve made genuine lifelong friends doing this. It’s so unreal. I get comments and messages from people that are really excited to talk to me about their favorite bands and songs or the new vinyl records they’ve bought. Sometimes, I even discover new music through people I otherwise would’ve never had the pleasure of interacting with. That is the coolest thing ever to me. People actually want to share their passions with me. That’s what drives me daily to keep creating, sharing, and connecting.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Growing up, I was definitely the weird kid and the obvious black sheep of the family. I had a tough time fitting in with others. I learned to channel emotions through forms of art like writing and filming. My other true love in life, besides music, is production. When I was a kid, we had a MacBook in the house. iMovie became my most used application. I would drag the laptop all around and make elaborate film scenes with my sister, my dolls, my parents, anything and anyone around really. As I grew older, I was able to get my hands on real cameras (huge shoutouts to my Canon EOS 80D and my Blackmagic Pocket Cinema for the worlds of content I’ve gotten to produce with them). For a long time, a camera never left my side. I filmed everything I could. My other other true love in life is comedy. I grew up watching shows like 30 Rock, Community, Parks and Recreation, Arrested Development, and so many more. My father actually also introduced me to some of my favorite comedy movies like Wayne’s World, Zoolander, Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure, and Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. I needed to find a way to incorporate that kind of comedy into what I was creating. That led me to get really into producing fun skits and sketches (and ultimately led present me to be in improv classes). I knew this was something I had to be doing with my life in some capacity. Years later, I finished university with a degree in production. I was able to work on some passion projects during my studies, including a comedy show and a few interesting films, but unfortunately, I graduated in May 2020. I was thrown into a closed industry in a closed world. As down on my luck as I was, I quickly realized that I didn’t need a film crew or tons of equipment to create content. I had a phone, and some apps, and that was all I needed. I dedicated a lot of time to posting TikToks and was able to gain a small following doing it. I felt so on top of the world. The best part about that was being able to marry my love for music and production and comedy into one thing. It felt like a dream, and it felt like people were really seeing me and caring about what I love. There have been many good times, and bad times that have come with building a platform for myself. I have never been a patient person, but social media has forced me to sit down and take a beat and let things happen. Consistency does pay off in the end. I also found myself getting really insecure for a while comparing myself to others online. However, once I turned that noise off in my head, I realized that I can’t compare my success to someone else’s. I have my own success in my own world. I’ve had countless thoughtful interactions with so many people and through doing this, I get to fall in love with music over and over again. This was really never for “fame” or followers, it was always for passion.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I will preface this by saying I am a total homebody. I do occasionally leave the apartment to go be a human, I swear. If I were to plan a cool week long trip for my best friend… the first stop would obviously be Amoeba Hollywood. It wouldn’t be a week with me in LA without hitting a record store, and what better one to hit than one with strong history. The days would consist of lots of going in and out of vintage stores, thrifting, with multiple coffee breaks. One of my favorite streets for vintage shopping is Magnolia Blvd in Burbank. Always some strange, fun items to discover. Sundays are definitely well spent at the Melrose Trading Post for more shopping, of course. We’d definitely dedicate a few hours of a day to go explore the Academy Museum, my favorite place to enjoy the art of film. The cool thing about LA is, you never really know what’s going on that week. We’d probably grab last minute concert tickets and definitely go to an improv show or two. I’d encourage them to visit when Puppet Up! has shows going on (it’s like a wild adult puppet show live on the Jim Henson lot, it’s amazing). The mornings would start and the nights would end at diners like North Hollywood Diner, Clark Street Diner, Swingers Diner, Fred 62, and of course can’t leave out Bob’s Big Boy. On the nights we don’t feel like being out, there will be takeout to eat and we’d on the couch watching whatever new comedy show or movie is out. I’m by no means anti-social, I just don’t love constantly going out. However, I do love hosting. Almost every weekend, I will be hosting some kind of event at my apartment, whether that’s a movie night, a bake off night, a board game night, or just a let’s hang out and listen to records night. I have great friends and we have great conversations. To me, there’s no better place to be than comfortable at home with the people you love.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I absolutely need to shoutout my family. My father introduced me to such influential music at a young age. I remember when I was 11 or so, every week he would write down a list of songs or artists for me to listen to. Little did I know at the time, but those lists held so much life changing music on them. Queen (my favorite band), R.E.M., Joe Jackson, Elvis Costello, Rush, Talking Heads, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin… just to name a few. Music became my best friend. The next year, my father gifted me a guitar: an Ibanez Acoustic Electric. Didn’t go as planned. I accepted early on that I was not meant to be a musician, I was meant to be a fan. When I was a teenager, my mother gifted me my first record player: an Electrohome Wellington. I honestly believed it was the coolest thing to ever exist. Every weekend after that, I would go to any store that sold vinyl near me, especially FYE, and burn through my allowance on records. I was truly an overwhelmed yet extremely excited kid at a candy shop. Some of my very first records included Nirvana: Bleach, Black Sabbath: Paranoid, Jeff Buckley: Grace, The Clash: London Calling, Led Zeppelin: Led Zeppelin, Elton John: Greatest Hits Volume II, Never Mind the Bollocks Here’s The Sex Pistols, The Beatles: Abbey Road, The Rolling Stones: Beggars Banquet, Guns N’ Roses: Appetite for Destruction, The White Stripes: White Blood Cells, Joey Ramone: Don’t Worry About Me, and The Misfits: Static Age. Over ten years later and that collection has grown to over 200 records. I’ve switched out my record player (to a U-Turn Orbit Plus that rocks my socks off), but I still keep my Electrohome on display; I even have a tattoo of it! My parents introduced me to a new world that would ultimately become my entire world. They’ve continuously supported my passions over the years by taking me to endless concerts, buying me way too much band merch, and encouraging me to bring those passions online. Also a thank you to my sister, for tolerating me blasting music everyday for years. Sorry!
