We had the good fortune of connecting with Liam Gist and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Liam, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I am a risk taker. I truly believe that with great risk, also comes great reward. I always wage the risks, however when the reward outweighs the risk, it is a no brainer for me. I packed my car and drove from Ohio to California to chase my dreams. Leaving my family, friends, and everything that I knew was a huge risk. The reward is creating a life that I want and making my dreams come true. The culture of LA thrives off of the hustling, entrepreneurial spirit and I fit right in. I have been here for 2 years and I have opened a business as a Food Vendor, a production company, and selling used cars. There were risks that came with all of these ventures that I eventually conquered and made me the man I am today.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am a filmmaker, and actor. When the Pandemic hit the pressure to book projects was relieved because every production had come to a complete halt. This gave me not only the time, but the mental space to create. I began writing, writing is something I always knew I was good at it, but never envisioned myself doing because of my on screen aspirations. I became very passionate about writing and creating a world for characters to “play” in. In creating my new show “Tugged” coming to Amazon Prime this Fall, this was a world that viewers who enjoy hit shows like “Power”, “Snowfall”, or “The Wire would love. The process was no where near easy and there were hurdles we ran into from production to post production. I understand that when you are doing something great, you will run into more reasons to quit and give up, than to keep going. This the first project I ever wrote, produced, and starred in. With that being the case, everyday was a new experience. I am thankful to have such a strong minded team because the only thing to do was to keep pushing on. I am thankful for the lessons I learned from my team and the experience I gained in the process. Filmmaking is an art and you have to be meticulous about the little things. I am living the life I envisioned and doing exactly what I want because of belief in myself, and execution. I will make my mark and stamp myself into the industry for a long time.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I am a BIG FOODIE so we would be sure to grab the best street tacos in Van Nuys on Sepulveda. The best pizza in LA is Chi-Pie and the best burgers are from Ballout Burgerz. On a hot day we go to the beach and visit the pier, while we’re there we cannot not go get some loaded nachos from Cabo Cantina. For desert, DK donuts shortly after! I enjoy scenic hikes with the beautiful weather we have so Runyon or topanga canyon for a hike. When I first moved to LA I would visit Hollywood blvd. with friends to go out and party at Playhouse or Argyle,
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
It is almost impossible to accomplish great things all alone. It truly takes a team. I let the universe lead me and it led me to meeting Ashley Mathaw while we were filming a skit. I had a concept in mind that Ashley fit one of the leading roles. We exchanged contact information and stayed in contact. We met up and talked about the project, she informed me of s few other people she knew that could help with cast and crew roles as this would be a lower budgeted project. Zakiya Matthews and Ineka Herring came on board and we put together an 8 month production that we are extremely proud of. Zakiya, Ashley, & Ineka worked tirelessly in every facet of the production to help the vision come to life. The beautiful thing about a team is the different perspectives you get. The perspectives and creativity they brought to the team is unmatched and I am extremely grateful and thankful to know them.
