We had the good fortune of connecting with Liesel Orend and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Liesel, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Well, as a person who has incorporated many different healing modalities (Chiropractic, acupuncture, craniosacral therapy, etc.), I don’t fit neatly into anyone else’s business! So I had to create my own. Having my own business gives me the freedom to treat patients in the way that serves them best, as well as to pursue my passions.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
My business, Orend Integrative Chiropractic Inc., is really just me! I am intensely curious about all things involving healing, so I’ve studied many different methods. The result is that I have a diverse set of skills to offer. I never get bored in my practice, because I do so many things: chiropractic, acupuncture, craniosacral therapy, visceral manipulation, structural bodywork and manual therapy of all kinds, as well as Chinese and Western herbology and nutrition. The only challenge to this approach is that sometimes, people are not sure how to categorize me! But the benefits far outweigh this challenge, because I am able to look at the whole person when I work, and help people find solutions that cross disciplines.

One specialty I do have is pediatric work. I see many babies, but also work with children and teens. Because I am certifed as a pediatric chiropractor, but also have extensive training in craniosacral therapy and visceral manipulation for children, I can offer a unique skill set to the kids I see. I’m also an “austism mom”, so I am very comfortable working with all kinds of needs.

I’m excited about workshops that I have just started offering for parents! We just had our first class, Craniosacral Therapy Techniques for Parents, and it was great to see moms learning skills that they can use to help their kids. There’s going to be another class May 18, and then on June 29 there will be a class on Eastern Medicine techniques, like acupressure and cupping. I see these as a way to give parents tools that they can use at home to help their kids with their health, emotional regulation, focus, sleep, digestion, and other issues.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Nothing beats long walks on the beach, and El Porto has great walking along with food and amenities, so I often bring visitors there. Mercado happy hour in Manhattan Village is one of our favorites for friends and family.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
To Jan Henry Sultan, a Certified Advanced Rolfer, and my husband! As one of Ida Rolf’s orginial instructors, Jan is a wealth of information. He has been supportive of my process in every way, from teaching me his own work, to having my back through six years of school, and extensive post graduate studies. We now share an office, where I feel his accumlated experience and wisdom every day.
