We had the good fortune of connecting with Lily King and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Lily, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I pursued an artistic career because creativity has always been at the core of who I am. For me, art isn’t just a hobby or a job; it’s a way of life. Through my photography and ceramics, I can delve into the depths of my imagination and translate my innermost thoughts and emotions into tangible forms and images. This process not only allows me to express myself authentically but also serves as a means of connection with others. Art has an incredible power to transcend language barriers and cultural differences, resonating with people on a level that words often can’t reach. It gives me a deep sense of fulfillment to know that my creations can evoke emotions or spark conversations. So, it’s not just about what I do; it’s about who I am and the impact I hope to make through my craft.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My art is mostly inspired by a journey of experimentation, loss, and unexpected discoveries allowing my work to resonates with authenticity and depth. Professionally, reaching this point has been a journey filled with sacrifices. While not without its difficulties, each pivot has offered a chance for knowledge and refinement. Through perseverance and a readiness to adapt and change course. l’ve navigated these challenges. Along the way, I’ve gained invaluable insights, particularly in understanding what I don’t want professionally. What distinguishes my brand is my embrace of imperfection and willingness to accept loss for the sake of gaining knowledge and fresh perspectives. This approach ensures each piece is an unmistakable Lily King original, never to be replicated.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I find getting out of the city to explore gardens, nature and having great culinary experiences is always super inspiring! Also, I really love my area of Los Angeles (Highland Park) and the downtown area. So this is what I would propose: Day 1:
Depart from LA and head to Ganna Walska Lotusland in Santa Barbara exploring the beautiful gardens of Lotusland, taking in the various plant species and landscapes. After the gardens we’d check into an accommodation in Santa Barbara for the night. Enjoy dinner at the Boathouse at Hendry’s and relax.
Day 2.
Depart from Santa Barbara and head north to Jalama Beach. Spending the day relaxing on the beach, taking in the beautiful scenery and rock hounding. Afterwards, drive to Los Alamos and check into accommodations at either the Alamo hotel or the Skyview for the night. Walk through the charming town and dine at Bells.
Day 3
Morning: Depart from Los Alamos and head to the neighboring town of Los Olivos for a wine tasting journey. We’d Visit various wineries like Stolpman Vineyards, sampling a variety of natural wines and enjoy the picturesque vineyard views.
Day 4
Depart from Los Olivos a take leisurely drive through Ojai while headed back towards my house in Highland Park. After settling in, I’d and make a nice dinner and we would all watch a great movie or just chat.
Day 5
Show them Highland Park by starting the day with coffee at Kumquat. We’d then visit my amazing wife at Matters of Space and then go shopping on York Boulevard at various small shops like Dotter, Big Bud Press, and Sip Snack. We would then head to Figueroa Street for lunch at Kitchen Mouse or Highly Likely and continue shopping at vintage stores like Soft Humans and The Bearded Beagle. In the evening we’d enjoy a delicious Mediterranean dinner at Checker Hall and enjoy fantastic music and a nightcap at The Gold Line Bar.
Day 6:
Explore the art district, eat at Manuela’s at Hauser & Wirth and explore the local galleries. We’d then have late lunch in Little Tokyo, exploring the area and culture. On the way home we’d stop in the historic part of Chinatown walk around and discover the up-and-coming galleries there.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d like to give a shout out to all the extraordinary women who have been pillars of strength in my life. Their support, encouragement, and enduring belief in me have been instrumental in shaping the artist I have become. From the early days of my creative journey to the present moment, their guidance and inspiration have been constant sources of motivation. I cannot imagine navigating this path with out their presence and influence. Each of them has imparted wisdom, shared experiences, and offered a shoulder to lean on during both achievements and challenges. Their unwavering belief in my potential have given me the confidence to pursue my artistic aspirations. To these remarkable women, I extend my deepest gratitude and admiration for their meaningful impact on my life and artistic journey.
