We had the good fortune of connecting with Linda Keo and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Linda, do you have some perspective or insight you can share with us on the question of when someone should give up versus when they should keep going?
At the very beginning of my Keookies Journey, before I even considered it to be a small business this was actually what I questioned everyday. If Keookies was worth pursuing and whether or not if I should keep going. It didn’t help that I am the most indecisive person ever. I spent my days looking at my work and comparing it to other ‘cookiers’ and became intimidated. I stopped comparing my journey to others and then started valuing Keookies. That’s when I realized I wanted to keep going because how much it meant to me. It was important that I wanted to do something for myself that I genuinely enjoyed and also it was important to show my son that his goals in life are worth pursuing no matter how hard it gets but how important it meant to him.
I suggest that if you have something you want to pursue and you are unsure about whether to keep going, ask yourself ‘how important is this to you’ and ‘why is it so important to you’. Don’t give up on what you work hard for and expect it to be hard. Always try different approaches or look at things in a different perspective before considering on giving up. But if you are considering on giving up, I would recommend on taking a step back and asking yourself if it serves you any more purpose. Does it make you happy? Is it as important to you as it was when starting? If something important to you, it’s not worth giving up.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am a cookie artist also now known as a ‘cookier’. I make custom sugar cookies for all types of special events and or occasions. I’d like to think what sets me apart from others is my cookie designs. You can’t find customized sugar cookies at walmart or Target and that is what makes me most proud about Keookies. I’ve seen the excitement of my customers giving Keookies as a gift and how happy and loved it made their friends/family feel.
How I got to where I am professionally was putting all my effort into developing Keookies. I treated Keookies as if it were my second child which as crazy as it sounds, it has become my second child. It definitely was not easy trying to balance having a newborn, now toddler and focusing on my small business. What has personally helped me was setting a schedule. I wanted to make sure I was very involved with my toddler but also my business so I had to find a schedule that worked and build healthy work habits. One lesson that I’ve learned along the way was to be forgiving to myself and let go of the guilt. Do not put so much work load on yourself and instead spread out your workload and prioritize them on different days throughout the week. And most importantly, with every failing moment I had when decorating a cookie set I took it as a lesson and learned from every single mistake.
What I want the world to know about Keookies is that it was made with the intent to bring pure joy and happiness when celebrating a special event or occasion. You cannot beat a personalized gift especially a yummy one!!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I love the beach so first thing i would recommend is going to the beach. I would invite my family to come along and we can have a picnic at the beach and pick up some local food. Every large meal will have to be family style for sure! We would go have dim sum in the morning at my favorite dim sum spot, Capital Seafood in Arcadia. Have lunch at Ookook Korean BBQ in Rosemead. Dinner would be at any asian family style restaurant. My favorite would be something similar to Newport Seafood restaurant. Or even going to a seafood boil like Kickin Crab and enjoying their seafood boil with a nice cold beer. For a fun night out, I recently checked out a Mexican bar called Kalaveras and the drinks got us going! Living in LA, there are so many options so we would definitely be on Yelp all day looking for something new to try.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
This is an easy one. Most definitely my fiance, Kevin. I can truly say that there wouldn’t be a ‘Keookies’ without his support and encouragement. There were so many days I had doubts and he reminded me why I started and I have a skill that is unmatched. Kevin and our son, Owen is what keeps me going and wanting better for our lives. I’d also like to give recognition to both our family, who have been very involved and always lending a helping hand when we needed it. I am truly blessed to be able to say I have a strong support group behind Keookies.
