We had the good fortune of connecting with Lino Martinez, Psy.D. and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Lino, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
When I lost my voice for two years, (because of a rare genetic disease), I made a vow to the higher sources that if I got my voice back, I would use it to motivate people and help those who want/need to be heard. So when I found the right doctors who put me on the medications that are now saving my life, I regained my voice and have a Podcast now dedicated to motivate people tell their stories. I also wrote a book about my entire life of all my struggles and how I overcame them. It will be released November 19, 2021, titled, A LITTLE LESS FEAR, like my podcast.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I received my doctorate in Clinical Psychology in October 2010. After graduating, my genetic disease gained control over my entire body and I had to endure over 40 surgeries within 10 years to save my life and keep me going. I decided to write a book about it since I feel deeply that my reason for living is to serve others. The pain that I have gone through emotionally, physically, mentally and spiritually, has all been to understand others and be as compassionate as possible. I am on a mission in life and I dedicate my life in recognizing that there are things I must do in this life helping people,
I use the art of writing, speaking, inspiration and poetry to help others open up and share their stories with a flexible, loving, kind approach.
I have not completely overcome my challenges. Living with disabilities is a 24/7 job and sometimes overwhelming. What keeps me going though, are the teachings of Buddha. I use the Buddhistic approach of using good virtue in with my body, speech and mind, to connect me with life’s purpose.
I want the world to know that we are all suffering equally. Not mine nor anyone else’s pain is worse. Pain is pain, but just because we are in pain, does not mean we have to SUFFER.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Well first, I would need to know what kinds of things my friend enjoys and then schedule an itinerary. I live in beautiful Pasadena, CA, where there are many museums, restaurants and scenic views. It would most likely involve something along those.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Everyone and anyone I have come to contact with deserves recognition. We are all equal and we all deserve the seeds that we plant and have been planted by others, to be cherished.
