We had the good fortune of connecting with Lola Darzens and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Lola, alright, let’s jump in with a deep one – what’s you’re definition for success?
If you had asked me when I was a child, I would have said be rich, famous and loved. if you had asked me as a teenager, I’d probably say the same thing. However, as I am evolving into the world as a fully formed adult, I believe my definition has gotten both simpler and more complex. I believe success can come in many shapes, it can come from maintaining healthy relationships with friends, family and colleagues, it can come from financial success when you are able to spend without looking at price tags and worrying about rent or bills, it can also come from having a fulfilling job that makes you go “tomorrow is going to be so exciting” when going to bed before a workday. I do stand by all of that, However, recently, I realized something about success. As i was scouring my social media feeds, I saw a story of someone talking about what they would change in their life. I asked myself that same question. What would I change about my life ? I realized that changing anything in my life would mean that I would not be in this place, at that time, doing what I’m doing now. That, to me, was unthinkable. And that’s when I knew. That is success : to be proud of every hardship I’ve overcome and every blessing that has come my way and that has made me me, right here, right now. I would not change it for the world. That is my success.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I believe every artist is different in how they approach their art and what they want to do with their gift. As someone who grew up around very few people having artistic jobs and/or planning to have artistic jobs, I have always felt odd and tried to fit in by going the more traditional route. But eventually, your artistic self catches on, grabs you by your shoulders and shakes you long and hard enough for you to come to your senses and go back into the arts. I have always felt that I had stories to tell, in many ways, and one day I got tired of trying to fit in. I wasn’t ashamed of being “weird” anymore, I wasn’t ashamed of daydreaming, I wasn’t ashamed to fully be me. And it took time to realize it. Some could say it was lost time but I believe otherwise. I believe that this amount of time was necessary to find myself in the state that I was and with the thoughts that I had so I could become the person that I am. Confident that I’m on the right track. Confident in my art. Confident. And that comes with time. time is a concept that I love to play with because I believe that everything that eludes human control is fascinating. What do you do with something uncontrollable ? Do you try to control it ? Do you sit back and watch ? Do you fear it ? I explore these themes in all of my projects : plays, shorts, novels, poetry …etc.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
We would definitely go on the coast and do a beach road trip. I also recommend doing a tour of the libraries and bookstores of LA. The Last Bookstores are definitely places you can’t miss. Hiking is also a must, Griffith Park is right there and while we’re at it, a Park tour! Verdugo Park, Griffith Park, Pan Pacific Park, all the parks ! As for food, I would say to try the French bakeries (biased opinion, I am French myself) and there’s so much diversity in the population of Los Angeles that I guarantee with a bit of searching, you can find amazing restaurants owned by people from all over the world ready to share their recipes with you! And, i would also highly recommend places like the Mint where you can listen to live music, it is so joyful to see artists perform their arts and to be there to cheer them on.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Let’s give credit where credit is due, the Art of Acting Studio in Los Angeles has nurtured a space for me that was safe and made me grow up in more ways than I probably realize. I have learned from my fellow students, from the amazing staff and from the unequaed teachers who have become my mentors and have helped me practice and improve my craft as an actress while giving me space to grow as a human. I could never thank them enough. During that time, I also joined the Earthlings Ensemble, a collective of artists created by a dear and talented friend, Anja Racić. We are creating shows, movies, workshops and it has really helped me cement my passion for creation and my want to translate into the world what happens in my brain.
