We had the good fortune of connecting with Londyn Nikole and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Londyn, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Transparently, I started my own business because I felt like I didn’t have a choice! As a makeup artist first, turned Creative Director it was extremely competitive and challenging to get signed to an agency, as an artist or creative. Most agencies require a degree, a minimum of 10 years as experience, or you must know someone. As a women of color, I felt like the options were limited for me. After working with creatives and music artists planning content , I started to see so many women in business who needed the same help with image and communicating their vision and brand image . I wanted to have a company that was personal ! Working with anyone on their professional image and career is extremely personal and I wanted the freedom to get to know my clients! From their mission, to overall vision, I wanted a personal company that focused on who that person wanted to be, instead of just hitting a quota!
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
On top of being a creative image consultant, I’m also a Lifestyle Journalist with a focus on image and beauty for the modern woman. I got started wearing makeup at 14, after stealing my mothers red lipstick ( it’s in my first book called ” Makeup Your Life” ) and I stole it because I wanted to feel beautiful and work on TV like the famous actress . I knew early on that image was so important! I could always work on my image , but I need to first feel beautiful enough to go after what I wanted . Getting into makeup was MY own personal way of making myself feel confidence, polished, and strong . After leaving home in NC at 19 to move to NYC, it has been an nonstop challenges of personal growth , building a network, staying focus on my overall goal, and trying to stay motivated passed feeling depressed and hopeless when things didn’t seem to be moving in any direction . I’ve learned that being authentic is the ONLY way to win. Cheering for other people when they win takes nothing from you, and AGE is just a number in terms of success. Focus on crossing your own finish line, cause you really don’t know what someone else is dealing with mentally .
Throughout my career as a makeup artist , I believe that every women is looking to experience the same feeling in the bottom any lipstick tube. In today’s society with so much pressure to LOOK GOOD, I feel like many women miss the mark on putting a image together for themselves, with the career, and happiness to match . I want to discuss more issues behind beauty and the extreme measurements women have done to maintain ” THIS ” image . That’s my brand story, once you makeup your mind, you will be able to makeup your life .
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
OMG! So I just moved to Towson, MD and because of the pandemic I haven’t been able to go out much, but I do have places that I love .
1. If you stay at any hotel try Lord Baltimore, not only is the bar area super sexy and dope. Martin Luther King Jr, (YES THAT ONE ) has also stayed at the historic hotel.
2. The Inner Harbor : Serious anywhere in this area has beautiful scenery, the best seafood, and IG worthy places to snap it up .
3. American Visionary Art Museum: If you’re a true creative and artist this museum is gorgeous . I haven’t been inside yet, but the outdoors and even on the website … breathtaking
4. Fell’s Point : Talk about Pinterest life . This area is break taking ! From the families walking around, the houses, and the landscape this area has so much to do and see. Oh and EAT, there is literally food everywhere !
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There are so many creativity dope women I can honestly name that are apart of my personal brand story! If I have to give personal recognition to someone it would be Sharra Dade. She helped me so much as a makeup artist when I first started to pivot my personal brand to focus more on TV image work. She wrote press releases for me , booked my first PR event with Melanie Fiona , and helped me land my first movie deal as a makeup artist . She saw my vision passed the makeup chair. I owe her alot!
