We had the good fortune of connecting with Lorena Flores and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Lorena, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Hi! Thank you for having me. Yes, it was a combination of a few things. But for the most part I think I am at my core a creative. Yes, starting a business requires a lot of business-y things I don’t understand or love to do. But, it’s also something that is completely your own and something you can build from the ground up, which takes a lot of imagination and creativity. That’s ultimately where I thrive. So I knew that I wanted to dedicate myself to something I knew would fulfill me, challenge me (I get bored easily), and that is centered around something I have expertise in. I am also motivated by the idea of not having to answer to anyone and having no ceiling for my growth.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I am Founder of Prepped for Days! We aim to make healthy food accessible for people with busy lives. We specialize in meal prep for individuals but also offer meal kits and family style meals so everyone can get in on some good eats! We prioritize wellness over weight-loss, personalization, and never sacrificing deliciousness. We’re not just about meal prep- we set ourselves apart from others by offering fitness and wellness tips to make for an overall wellness brand by staying away from diet culture language like “keto, low carb, fat free”. We hope to teach people that food isn’t good or bad and that you can make better choices in your daily life to enjoy food without all the guilt. I am super proud of what was once a little side gig in a home kitchen is now a thriving (small) business that has 3 employees and serves people all over Los Angeles.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I love this question! Ok so it would be a road tip to from LA to Paso Robles, Napa, Big Sur, Santa Barbara, and in that order. Sleep, food, wine, repeat!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My parents! My mom (Nicaraguan) and dad (Mexican) were both immigrants and both so incredibly hard working. They both had businesses together, and separately. I think I get my hustle type attitude from them for sure. Since I could walk I remember my dad working in his glass shop, my mom holding me while answering the phones, and both of them working through the evening and on weekends. I had a really decent upbringing until my dad passed away when I was 12 and then it was just me and my mom. Things were very, very, hard for a while there as my mom learned to stand up on her own 2 feet. But I just remember her being relentless and always getting back up and dreaming big. As hard as that was, because of them I learned from a really young age about resilience, hard work, and creativity. And for that, I am super grateful.
