We had the good fortune of connecting with Lorenza Bernasconi and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Lorenza, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
To me, the most important factor behind the success of our work at Pitch Black (where we do theater in complete darkness) is to tell a story in it’s fullest potential with all of the other senses.
Making sounds and smells very specific so that it takes you (the audience) to the moments in the play with us.
As an actress in the show, not only is it important for me to work on my characters like in traditional theatre, it is also essential for me to be moving around the pitch black space in such a seamless way that it creates a magical moment for those who get to experience it.
I also believe we are cautious that the lack of sight does not feel like a gimmick, It’s an invitation to experience life in the way some people do, without sight, but it is all grounded in truth and to tell a beautiful story of immigration and resilience.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’ve been acting in the US , in both english and spanish, for more than five years now which feels crazy to say. Coming from Peru, There is a lot of work to do in order to be allowed to continue tostay and show proof of professional success. I know how lucky I am to be here and how much fight and effort is behind that.
I love new contemporary pieces , working with writers in the room, and challenging the ways we do theatre.
I’ve learned so much from being a part of the theater world in Philly, to Off Broadway in New York. It is very special that I have been able to do this in both languages and that now theatre brings me to LA.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Well, my company, Pitchback theatre and I , are here in LA because we were invited to Latino Theatre Company’s Encuentro Festival & I have to recommend coming to check out their work! even if the festival is still not going on , go to the LATC building in DTLA and check out their shows . They always do new works and support and incredible amount of theatre makers.
There is a bar a block away, called Beelman’s… Vegan bar food. Incredible un- paralleled. You can go there after the show!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
when I immigrated to the US to study acting, I truly had no connections and very little understanding of the field here, so I feel like I need to shout out the Philly Latine theater community for being the first ones to embrace me. I learned so much from the coolest women.
For this project I really need to shut out Facundo Bogarin, Carlos, Armesto, and Martín Bondone ; the three directors of our Pitchblack show, Odd Man Out. They encouraged me to create characters outside of my comfort zone and they saw in the young actress with a vintage fur coat that walked into their audition room, someone who was hungry to create new art ( which I am!! )
