We had the good fortune of connecting with Lou Zhen and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Growing up within the family business, I was enveloped in a bustling atmosphere, surrounded by busy employees and visiting clients. From an early age, I eagerly explored every corner of our clothing company, marveling at the humming sewing machines, intricate fabric patterns, and formal conferences with clients. Fearless and inquisitive, I indulged my childlike curiosity by assuming every role, from model and designer to buyer and chief executive.
The cooperative nature of film production immediately conjures memories of the production line that I first encountered in my youth. I remember going to the cinema with friends, debating enthusiastically over directing and cinematography, reminiscent of the time my father and I would frequent different markets and fashion shows, discussing the latest trends. My experiences as a child not only instilled in me the importance of collaboration but also inspired me to continually express my own opinions while absorbing diverse perspectives from others. My father always treated me as a professional, and he involved me in various business activities, from managing our family operations to collaborating with designers. This unique, hands-on experience enhanced my understanding of communication, cooperation, and leadership.
My journey began with double majoring in visual arts and theater at the University of California, San Diego, but it wasn’t until I discovered the art of filmmaking that I truly found my calling. There is something truly magical about the power of storytelling that captivates me. As a storyteller, I’ve come to appreciate that it’s not just about self-expression but also about connecting with the audience, fostering empathy, and creating a resonating experience. Storytelling is at the core of humanity, and I find it fascinating. My time in theater also revealed to me the intriguing complexity of human contradictions and the universal sentiment that binds us all together, regardless of nationality or ethnicity.
Becoming a producer was a journey filled with countless obstacles and challenges. From the intense competition and ever-changing landscape of the industry to the financial pressures and creative challenges of bringing a story to life on screen, the road was never easy. The long hours, tight deadlines, and high-stakes decisions added to the pressure, making it difficult to strike a balance between creative vision and business acumen.
One of the most magical things about producing is the thrill of facing new challenges. Every project presents its unique set of obstacles, whether it’s navigating a tight budget or dealing with creative differences. But it’s in these moments of adversity where the real magic happens. Collaborating with a talented team to find creative solutions to complex logistic problems is both exhilarating and fulfilling. The process of problem-solving and finding new ways to tell a story is what makes the journey so exciting.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Los Angeles is a city that’s famous for its love of thrifting and vintage finds. With an amazing variety of flea markets and thrift stores, it’s the perfect place for any shopper looking for unique and exciting items. From the world-renowned Rose Bowl Flea Market that attracts vendors from all over, to the local and charming Melrose Trading Post, there’s a market for everyone.
Thrifting is a fun activity for me because it allows me to discover unique and interesting items that have their own story and history. The excitement of the hunt and the anticipation of finding that perfect piece is always thrilling. You never know when you might stumble upon that one-of-a-kind item that you’ve been searching for, or come across something completely unexpected.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Attending the American Film Institute is one of the most enriching experiences. The opportunity to study and collaborate with talented filmmakers from all over the world is invaluable. I was constantly exposed to diverse perspectives, styles, and techniques, and I found myself growing along with my fellows. The connections and friendships I made at AFI have lasted beyond my time there and have continued to be a source of inspiration and learning for me. The connections with filmmakers from different countries are invaluable for me as I continue to pursue a career in the film industry. By surrounding myself with like-minded individuals who share my passion for film, I’ve been able to find mentors who offer guidance and support, as well as challenge me to continue growing and evolving in my craft.
