We had the good fortune of connecting with Lucas Rivera and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Lucas, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Throughout my professional career as an arts administrator and educator, my primary focus has always been on celebrating the diversity and vibrancy of the arts and culture within the communities I served. When I conceived the idea of founding Sakul Creative, I was determined to uphold this commitment – a commitment that unwaveringly supports and empowers emerging artists and arts organizations in communities of color.
As I contemplated ways to further contribute to my arts community, I meticulously developed the three core pillars of my company’s consulting process even before its official launch. This process centers around the values of community, data-driven insights, and a steadfast dedication to our vision and mission.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’m a proud Afro-Puerto Rican multidisciplinary artist, and my passion for self-expression knows no bounds. I channel my creativity through a diverse range of mediums, from music and dance to painting and poetry, each serving as a powerful canvas for my unique cultural narrative. As an artist, my work becomes a vessel to share this rich story with audiences across the nation, and I’ve been fortunate to exhibit my work in various vibrant cities, including Philadelphia, New Jersey, New York, Puerto Rico, San Antonio, Miami, and Los Angeles.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
My favorite city spots combine the charm of old architecture with the serenity of outdoor spaces. Additionally, I have a soft spot for indulging in delectable Korean BBQ, savoring a good cup of coffee, and satisfying my sweet tooth. For me, a fun day involves the thrill of live music in any genre and people-watching. Depending on the time available, I’d certainly catch a concert or two. I also relish the idea of lounging in a park while enjoying some sweets and perhaps joining a lively drum circle.
So, our day would likely kick off with a tour of Union Station, followed by a leisurely stroll towards Gloria Molina’s Grand Park. We’d make a pit stop at “Go Get Em Tiger” in Grand Central Market to grab some coffee. After that, it’s off to Quarters for a mouthwatering Korean BBQ experience. We’d take some time to relax at Echo Park, do a bit of shopping on Melrose, and round off the day with a visit to my favorite Brazilian Steak House, Samba.
To cap it all off, we’d head to the beautiful Ford Theater for a concert under the stars. I have a deep appreciation for their concert series and their dedication to supporting community artists, making it the perfect way to conclude our unforgettable day.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I owe a significant portion of my success to my wife. Her unwavering support and commitment to helping me thrive have been consistent throughout our 22-year marriage. She not only encouraged me to complete my bachelor’s degree but also inspired me to pursue a master’s degree. I’ve learned, and continue to learn, a great deal from her to this day.
During the pandemic, when I faced a job loss, it was her persistent presence that guided me through the process of launching my own business. It is thanks to her and our two wonderful boys that I’ve adopted a mindset of proactivity – I will never passively wait for opportunities to come my way. Instead, I am determined to assert myself, make my presence known, and become a sought-after force in my field.
