We had the good fortune of connecting with Luke Storey and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Luke, what matters most to you?
It’s difficult to narrow my guiding principles down to one, as there are many, and they each provide so much value to different aspects of life. But if I had to select one with broad application, it would be humility.

I loosely define it as the ability to have an accurate perspective on one’s character liabilities and assets. To be able to acknowledge the areas of life in which one falls short while at the same having an appropriate level of self-esteem.

Humility, by its very nature, requires self-honesty, which is invaluable to personal development. I find that when I’m honest with myself, it helps me to remain open-minded and teachable. It also guards against the pitfalls of pride and arrogance.

It’s also a constant source of inspiration in that one can never achieve a finite level of humility. It’s something we continue to strive toward. No one can claim to have ‘mastered’ this principle because doing so would negate the very nature of the achievement.

Put simply, humility keeps us right-sized. Not playing small while at the same time not exaggerating our status.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
As a former musician, I have always been drawn to the creative arts. My teenage obsession with music led to a 17-year career as a celebrity fashion stylist, where I worked with 100’s of artists over the course of my career. One advantage I had was that I had the ability to understand the creative vision of an artist from their perspective. During my time as a stylist, it was common that the desired outcome of a project was quite different for the artist than it was the industry professionals surrounding them. For example, a musical artist might have conveyed their desires to me, while their manager, or designated record company liaison had something entirely different in mind. Because I understood the artist from their perspective, I was able to deliver a finished product (a look or outfit) that satisfied all parties involved in the project.

So being a stylist was an incredible outlet for both my visual creativity, as well as the art of collaboration. It also taught me a lot about negotiation, and working with a team of creatives, which can be challenging for many.

My success in the fashion and entertainment industry led to the creation of the first commercial enterprise- School of Style, which was the world’s first independent fashion school for stylists. There were many entrepreneurial lessons learned in the 12 years I spent running, and scaling that business. Although many don’t see running a business as a creative art, when approached from a certain perspective, it certainly is. For example, creating high-value educational content, and finding innovative means by which to market it can be a very fulfilling creative outlet.

After spending many years at www.shoolofstyle.com, then winding down my styling career, I made the decision to transition completely into the health and wellness space. This provided an opportunity to leverage my creativity and collaboration skills into the business I own today. Having built many powerful relationships in the wellness industry over the years, I was able to quickly gain notoriety by launching my podcast, The Life Stylist. Because I had a professional background that was unique to the wellness space, I set myself apart in my approach to content creation, and it’s marketing.

Creating a podcast platform that offered a fresh perspective on wellness and spirituality paved the way for many other opportunities to add value to peoples lives, such as motivational speaking.

To summarize my secret to success in all of my creative ventures, I would say that putting my focus on what I give more so that what I get has been the most powerful driver of achievement. When people sense that the reason you serve them is not solely based on personal gain, it builds trust. And in the world of content marketing, trust is everything.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
My go-to for recreation, and rejuvenation is always rooted in nature. There is a healing power in nature that can’t be matched by any other activity or entertainment.

One of my greatest joys is taking friends and loved ones on trips to experience the wonders of the natural world, and to experience all the beauty it has to offer.

Whether taking a polar plunge in a freezing creek, or dipping in mineral rich hot springs, I find that there is no better way to spend quality time with the people I love. Nature provides the perfect backdrop for deep presence and connection.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
As a twenty-six-year veteran of recovery from drug addiction and alcoholism, I must give credit where credit is due: The teaching of the 12 steps has been the most impactful influence not only on my sobriety but also on my life.

The universal laws codified in the steps have been my guiding light through numerous challenges over the years.

In addition to the transformative power of these spiritual principles, the love and compassion of other members of recovery groups is something for which I will be eternally grateful.

While the 12 steps are foundational in my approach to life, work, and relationships, they also led me into many other areas of spiritual study and application.

Once I have a strong footing in sobriety, I went on to learn from many masters, such as Dr. David R. Hawkins. His perspective on devotional non-duality has revolutionized my life immeasurably.
