We had the good fortune of connecting with Madison McElwee & Kayla Janssen and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Madison McElwee, do you have any habits that you feel contribute to your effectiveness?
There are a few habits that I feel has helped our partnership and business succeed. First and foremost would be keeping our word. Whatever my business partner and I say we are going to do, we do. We are truly women of our word, we always follow through to make it happen, and that can be a rare find in the entertainment industry. The second habit of success we talk about frequently at M&K Creative Productions is always be true to your worth. If a job/opportunity comes along that isn’t worth your time or doesn’t match your value as a creative… then you shouldn’t take the job. We always try to hold standards for ourselves as individuals and together for our partnership.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Before we started our company, M&K Creative Productions, my partner and I were mainly on screen talent who wanted to work just as much offscreen. We wanted to create a collaborative company that promotes this idea of ‘Artist Producing Artists.’ In this industry….it takes a village. Our belief is that two heads are better than one and that there is room for everyone in this industry. Right now we are extremely proud and very excited about our short film we started developing back in 2019. The pandemic was definitely a challenge and a huge set back for this project. During that difficult time we decided there wasn’t much we could do, but stay home and continue to write this film. Throughout the time of quarantine, we allowed ourselves to grow and sharpen our storytelling skills and what came out of that process was beautiful. With what first started as a small short film has now evolved into a complete television series. We are very excited to see where this project takes us.

At the end of the day even if all we do is inspire someone to go after MORE THAN ONE of their passions, we feel like we have done our jobs as true artists. A lot of times in this industry who have to pick and choose what “dream” to go after because of time, or money, or branding, or pressure from an agent. We strongly disagree. We believe that you should go after ALL of your passions no matter how many. We have leaned that it is okay to play, to do trial and error, and yes, it is also okay to fail. As long as you are going after not just one, but ALL of your dreams.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
When we first started M&K Creative Productions, we were just a couple of dancers who wanted to do more. We wanted to write, produce, direct, and all around just push ourselves to keep creating outside our box. We were both biting at the nail to start working in film. Transitioning from just dance and choreography into the world of film was really difficult at times. There is one person in particular that not only believed in us and trusted us, but he also put his money where his mouth was and devoted his own time and efforts into helping us achieve our new goals. His name is Angelo Restaino. He has a Los Angeles based production company called, Paper Crane Productions. Angelo is a fellow hard working human with a beautiful creative soul. Cheers to Angelo and all he has done for our business.
