We had the good fortune of connecting with Malayla Fields and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Malayla, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
From a very young age I had a love for fashion. My mom was a model in my younger years and she always allowed me to express myself through clothes. I started by picking out my own clothes, I would accompany her at fashion shows, and I was a huge fashion magazine collector (I still have hundreds). Once I got to high school, I began studying fashion; designers, sewing, modeling, etc. I soon fell in love with every facet of the fashion industry. After HS, I decided to get a Fashion Merchandising degree! While in college I created Fashion major t-shirts that I sold to my classmates that was a huge success! , I then signed up to be a vendor at our semi-annual university fashion show where I sold a variety of things like hats, phone cases, swimwear, etc. For my Sr. project I created my brand BAECATION! Baecation was inspired by my love of travel and my hopeless romantic ways. Today my business is approaching three years old and has been growing significantly over time!
Please tell us more about your work. We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about. How did you get to where you are today professionally. Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges? What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way. What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
What sets Baecation apart from other swim brands is it’s niche. We cater to jet setting couples who enjoy the finer things in life. What’s been most exciting for me is when customers reach out to us after their trip to share pictures. It’s mind blowing to know my designs have been places i’ve only dreamed of; Bali, Kenya, Egypt, Aruba, you name it, they’ve gone. I feel my brand is successful because it’s authentic. I’m not trying to keep up with others when I design, I genuinely make what I like, what I would want to wear on vacation with my significant other. I’m just excited other people like my designs and it makes them happy. Love notes from my customers are the best part. I want people to recognize my brand is made with love. Love is the inspiration with a twist of fashion!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
My best friend actually lives in Atlanta and has only been to LA to visit me! Some of my favorite places to take her are all the fashion destination from the fashion district to melrose to Rodeo! A trip is not complete without a beach day! Last time I took her on a picnic to Dockwieler and we ran into J COLE!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
MY MOM!!! She has supported me every step of the way. Without her, I would have no creativity. As a child, she really allowed me to express myself in all art forms. We love fashion, arts & crafts, and all things beautiful. When I created my brand she invested in it and encourages me to keep going even on my toughest day. I give all credit for my success to her!
