We had the good fortune of connecting with Marae Torrelier and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Marae, what role has risk played in your life or career?
As the daughter of immigrants I’ve always watched my family’s risks be rewarded with opportunities. I chose not to follow on the traditional footsteps of school, work, marriage, kids etc… but I always knew that my biggest rewards would come from taking big risks. When I left my career at ABC/FOX to become a seasonal worker in hopes to travel full time I received lots of backlash from everyone I knew including my family, but I knew I wanted to create a lifestyle I did not want a vacation from and I thought I could always go back to an office job anytime I wanted. I never Thought it would go this far, but being able to travel full time and fill my daughter’s days with my presence and experiences together is a gift I would take any risk for, over and over again.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My art mainly focuses on telling stories through photos/videos and the stories I tell are those of encouragement to design the life you want. I started traveling full time because I loved seeing the world and I loved the person traveling helped me become. When I started seeing the power my travels had on others, I realized there was a grander mission. Seeing other families get out on the road and experience life the way THEY have dreamed of is so rewarding. The journey here wasn’t always easy. I started just like everyone else. Not knowing what or how to do this social media thing. but then something clicked: it’s all about community. The biggest lesson I’ve learned is that your community is everything and that without it no amount of beautiful photos or videos will get you anywhere. My main goal is to motivate other families to think outside the box and take the leap in creating the life they desire. So many of us spend the grand majority of our lives running around in a rat race waiting for “later” to actually start living. I’ve learned that life is fragile, and NOW is truly all we have.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If a friend was visiting we’d go on a trip around the city as if I was seeing it for the first time. First off some hikes, some sunset picnics, discovering local foods and some museums as well. Let’s not forget the beach, maybe some thrift shopping and an art gallery or exposition as well. I would also include learning something new, like a painting or surf class, and lastly we’d drive to some national or state park to enjoy nature away from the crowds.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My story wouldn’t be my story without the support of my community. When I speak to clients about the power of social mediate everyone thinks the power lies in beautiful photos; but the truth is the power social media is in building a community. My community has been with me from day one and it is because of them that I have been able to create this lifestyle for myself and my family. Through wanting to show them how it’s doable I have enriched my own existence in ways I cannot even begin to count. All of my learnings, success and progress is for and because of them.
