We had the good fortune of connecting with Marc Antonio Pritchett and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Marc Antonio, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Sharing The Spotlight was born out of a desire to connect underserved artists to those with the power of upward mobility. I started my entertainment career over 20 years ago and as such have had a front row seat to the obstacles people of color have navigating this industry. The overarching goal is to do the things I wish someone did for me in my early career. I was in an EDI meeting between several artistic directors last year and constantly heard the complaint that they just didn’t know how to find underserved artists. I knew then that I wanted to make sure that no one could ever say that again.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am a multi-hyphenate that focuses on a mix of the combative, dramatic and musical arts. My journey has been far from easy. If I were to sum up the obstacles I have faced it would be a lack of access and opportunity. Compounding this is the difficulty of capitalizing the opportunities I do get so momentum has been a hard thing to nurture and sustain. The biggest lesson I have learned is to treat each opportunity like it is your last. Control what you can and make the most of every situation that comes your way.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Check out any intimate theatres in your area. There is a truth and rawness to the artistic expression there not often present in larger venues.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to shout out all of the theatre companies that made Sharing The Spotlight possible. Sacred Fools, Artists At Play, Ammunition Theatre and Company Of Angels. The brain trust formed by leadership of these companies was invaluable to achieving the positive change we have brought about and will continue to bring about through the Sharing The Spotlight initiative.
