We had the good fortune of connecting with Marco Pelusi and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Marco, what do you attribute your success to?
Perseverance is the single most important factor behind my success. Knowledge and experience certainly play a big part – but the single biggest factor has been simply hanging in there. I used to think that it was fun and exciting to be ‘new’, to be a new business. But as these fifteen years of owning my own salon and producing my own products have shown me, it’s incredibly more valuable to work to develop a long term reputation. And perhaps even more important than this is the relationships I have created. Over time, people come to respect and rely on you and your expertise. I continue to look for and maintain quality and integrity in what I do – over and over – and with time – and perseverance – more continues to unfold in a positive way.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I was so lucky to have grown up with a family owned chain of salons, with an emphasis on haircare product development. This experience directly led me to work in-house at haircolor companies and to create products within their manufacturing houses. After a while, I knew I wanted to create my own haircare system for color treated hair. I also had the opportunity to work with celebrities. So I enmeshed my Hollywood life with my beauty industry world – opened my own salon on Robertson in the heart of the West Hollywood Design District and created Marco Collagen Color Guard HairCare. The system thrives today, even amidst quarantine. I poured my knowledge and passion into these products. I also enjoy teaching; at the salon, at the major shows, and now, on Zoom! I enjoy sharing and giving my knowledge and experience, and helping people with their hair needs. I’ve learned to persevere; even in the hard times. Moving forward has always led to the next step; so it’s all about moving forward.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
La Peer Hotel is our neighboring luxury hotel where we work on the special guests who travel here to West Hollywood; I’d have to recommend a night there, for sure! Also, Craig’s is a lovely restaurant where the celebs love to dine; it’s just down the street on Melrose. Take a ride to the beach – Malibu is a must. Especially if you’re visiting from a colder climate, there’s nothing like taking a drive out to Malibu and putting your feet in the sand on a December day. Then drive back to West Hollywood for hair and luxury dining!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My parents. Thank you, Dad, for your never ending support of what I can do and what i am capable of. Dad and his brother developed a chain of salons back east, and his know-how has been the secret to my success. Also, my mother, who is no longer with us, was literally a champion of me and every single thing I ever tried to do. Mom’s encouragement fostered my sense of belief in myself and what I could achieve professionally. Thanks, Mom and Dad!
