We had the good fortune of connecting with Maria de Jesus Sanchez and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Maria de Jesus, maybe we can start at the very start – the idea – how did you come up with the idea for your business?
Hi, my name is Maria de Jesus Sanchez, Dental technician as career but a mom of 3 and artisan in the real life, being a housewife was one of the most satisfactory things I have ever made in my life, no regrets! however it was a 7/24-365 demanding full time, absorbing, never endless nonpaying job. The kids were grown up, and I have to do something else, something for me, something to fulfill my dreams and passions. A flea market started at my kids’ high school, and I saw an opportunity to sell something…. what am I going to sell? OMG, I have to do something… so a Michaels flyer came to my hands and yes, a Cricut special sale! So here we go. I’ll take my chances; Do I know how to use it? NO. Do I know what I need to work with? NO. BUT …. I was pretty sure that I’ll figure it out. The learning process started and after a few fails or many … I nailed it. Marita’s World LA started selling decorated T-shirts, tote bags, any occasion cards and Starbucks coffee cups, under a tent with two tables. A few months later the pandemic started and once again, what I’m going to do now? God knows I have to do something because at home I had everything I need it to sew face masks! so let’s do it and started sewing face masks and selling them on Instagram and my web site. Hardwork pays off and got enough money to buy that Laser printer I saw once on an advertisement, once again here I was, take the risk and go for it. Do I know how to use it? NO. Do I know what I need to work with? NO, but as I always say, if I don’t know how to use it, YouTube will teach you, If I don’t know how to make it, goggle it, if it’s not there, I’ll invented it. learning to use the laser machine was challenging but very satisfactory. After two years on that process with success and many fails, I can now tell that this is what I Love to do. My husband supports me at all times and my 3 kids are very proud of me. I took the risk, I used my chances and Marita’s World LA is now an LLC and keeps going every Saturday where everything started, Los Feliz Flea Market at John Marshall High School in Los Angeles. Once a Month at The Rose Bowl Flea Market and some arts and crafts fairs like Jackalope and Calabazas Pumkin Festival. Growing slowly but one step at a time, here we are.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
As an artisan, the process of learning how to design and create fine wood and leather jewelry has been challenging but having the passion for learn and create, it’s what make it easier. I had to learn by myself how to prepare and work with different materials and how to use them with the laser printer. Once I learned how to work with the laser, I’m always ready to improve and want to learn more, new stuff, different ideas are always coming and I’m looking forward to making them happen. Working hard, always with my heart is what I love to do. Learning from my mistakes, pushing myself to get the best of what I’m creating, not perfection, but yes, handcrafting with love beautiful and original pieces, it’s what makes my brand unique. Marita’s World LA LLC has been running for 3 years and hopping for many more.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Downtown LA is full of places to go and visit. I would take my friend to have some lunch at Grand Central Market and visit some museums around the city. One my favorite place to visit is the beach. I would take my friend on a metro ride to Santa Monica beach to walk in the sand or ride a bike and explore the area. Another fun activity is hiking by Griffith Park Observatory and catch the paletas man or have a pick nick by the “Osito” as my kids called the statue at the park entrance. If that happens that my friend is here by the Dodgers game season, for sure I’ll try to get some tickets to visit Dodgers stadium to cheer our team, Go Dodgers Go! The famous Hollywood walk of fame is a must visit.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Definitely my family. My husband and my 3 kids. Their support has been always unconditional, cheering me all the time and telling me how proud they are of what I have achieved with my small business, they inspire me to keep going and fight for what I want.
