We had the good fortune of connecting with Mariana Palova and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Mariana, do you have a favorite quote or affirmation?
Tony Morrison once said: ‘If there’s a book that you want to read, but it hasn’t been written yet, then you must write it.’ That’s my mojo. If I’m tired of not finding the books that I want to read, I write them. If I don’t find the art that I want to see, I create it, if I don’t have the self confidence that I need to not give up and keep creating, I go for therapy, If I can’t find in the human kind the inspiration that I need, I go for the wild, for nature; if reality does not show me my true self, I go for fantasy. The fuel that makes me work is the desire to create what the world denies to me. It applies to art, to literature, to human rights, It’s ambicious and even painful, specially in Latinamerica, but I don’t know how to live otherwise.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?

My artistic work is conceived primarily as a form of self-discovery in an attempt to understand the connection between the external factors that fascinate me (mythology, different occult magic systems, and cultural diversity) with those that lie within me in a primal form (the connection with nature and the interpretation of the spirit). And what I love about this, is the way that my artworks has defined my identity, and not otherwise. This may be hard to understand, we are used to the idea that we create in base of what we are, but for me, I am what my art and literature is.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’m not a fan of the concrete jungle (I would prefer to take you to the amazing sequoia forests!), but there are some places that I love to sneak up. Speaking of LA, as a second home of mine, I love The Last Bookstore, a classic of the city, and of course, I wouldn’t be a writer without recommending my favorite coffee shop: Tierra Mia. Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
First, to my family. Even when we have widely different perceptions of the life, they are always supporting me, scaried as hell for my strangeness, but always supportive. To my personal werewolf, for letting me be his moon, and to my Nation (my lovely editors, friends and readers), who put all their hearths in this this toxic relationship with me, where they give me all their love and trust, and in exchange I give them books that makes them suffer.
