We had the good fortune of connecting with Maritza Aguirre and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Maritza, where are your from? We’d love to hear about how your background has played a role in who you are today?

My family is from El Salvador, Central America. I am 3/4 Salvadoran and 1/4 Guatemalan. My family migrated to the USA in the 70’s. I was my parents only child to be born here. Since I am a first generation immigrant, I learned as a young child that I had to work hard and hustle to be successful. I saw first hand that the American dream is not given to you. My parents worked hard for us kids to make it. My parents were adamant with chores, making and saving money and being career oriented.. Growing up one of my several chores was to take care of the yard, the plants, our pets, etc. To be honest, I loved taking care of the plants as a kid. It was so refreshing and meditative. Being that I was the youngest of 3 children, I always had to prove myself and that truly made me have higher expectations of myself. To this day I still want to make my parents, my husband, kids and the Latino community proud. So if you dream it, work for it (don’t take any short cuts), then you can achieve it.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?

My brand Soulful Succulents was formed from all the adversity in my life. Life has not been easy, it has been a lot of long hours, hard work, and passion. I personally work hard on being mindful and positive so I  balso focus my positive energy into making my arrangements and growing my succulents and plants. Reason being that I want to literally make someone feel special, feel seen and heard. I want them to have a peaceful and fun experience at my workshops or when they purchase an arrangement or house plant. With that said, I work hard to make sure my succulent arrangements are all original pieces made to order and I work to make my workshops very mindful and personal.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.

I am definitely a lover of travels so I actually would not stay in one city. I would want to go the beach, I love the coves in Laguna and then back up to downtown Los Angeles to have a roof top dinner and drinks. I love watching the sunset at Perch, but my favorite sunsets are definitely beach sunsets.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?

I give a shout to my family for supporting my business. My husband, sons, my mom, and my niece for all the many hours we have spent to prep for my workshops. I thank my husband and son for taking me on nursery trips. I thank my husband for packing up my car and my younger son for unpacking after a workshop. I thank my older son for helping me plant hundreds of tropical plants and succulents all around our yard. I want to give a special thank you to my mom for helping me prep for my workshops, she works so hard and encourages me and even pushes me to keep on going when I am beyond exhausted. And my niece. I thank her for her dedication and loyalty to taking me to our venues and prepping our workshop spaces. She is my right hand woman in action. A very fast and patient worker.

I also want to thank my parents for teaching me to be a hard worker and to not accept failure. Both my mom and dad have always pushed me to be my best.
I completely changed careers from being a high school teacher and now I’m working as someone that provides beautiful plants and arrangements from my garden. Best of all, I am back to teaching and I love meeting all my clients who then become friends.

Soulful Succulents business grew out of a difficult situation. It is true that your test becomes your testimony. I thank God it has been a successful journey.
