Hi MARK, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Having dedicated a decade to competitive sailing in the Santa Monica Bay, I consistently faced the challenge of finding the perfect glove for the demands of the sport. Existing options were either overly padded, compromising dexterity necessary for handling intricate shackles and pins, or lacked the essential protection required in rough sailing conditions. In response to this gap in the market, I founded Marine Gear in 2022—a reputable brand committed to crafting gloves that meticulously cater to the distinctive needs of sailors. Our gloves strike the perfect balance, offering optimal dexterity and protection for sailors actively involved in sailing, rigging, and yacht maintenance.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Raised in an entrepreneurial household where both my parents were involved in retail and real estate, I observed them navigating life’s challenges without an economic safety net. Witnessing their experiences fueled my desire to secure a stable career with benefits, aiming to avoid the struggles they faced. After a 25-year journey, primarily in banking, I’ve come full circle, returning to a life of entrepreneurship. So here I am, launching a product to support a sport that I love.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I always encourage visitors to experience an afternoon sail on the Santa Monica Bay. While Los Angeles may not be renowned for its maritime traditions, I can always guarantee a friendly crew, favorable winds, and breathtaking sunsets.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
A shoutout goes to everyone I’ve had the pleasure of crewing with in the past. The years spent aboard sailboats, navigating countless trials and errors, discerning effective methods, and discovering diverse approaches to achieving positive outcomes have significantly shaped my perspective. This wealth of experience played a crucial role in the design of my gloves, tailored for the sailors who will be relying on them.
