We had the good fortune of connecting with Marsalis Davis and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Marsalis, can you share the most important lesson you’ve learned over the course of your career?
The most important lesson my career has taught me is to always be consistent. Each week create all new content to stay in tune with fans and new viewers. Consistency helps me stay ahead of the curve whether it entails experimenting new sounds or perfecting my marketing strategies. I never feel as if I’m losing my step. By the time I know it, my catalog is growing tremendously as well as traffic passing through my website and socials. In this field, having too much is always a great sign.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
What I believe sets me apart from other artists and even other creatives is that I have my own style. When I walk into a room my energy is felt, you know. It’s as if my aura just pours out. Musically I definitely know my sound is unheard and extraterrestrial. It’s so unknown that you want to hear more.

My journey has been a roller coaster but I’m proud of myself that I never gave up. I’ve overcame ever obstacle that has been thrown at me. I remember having trouble finding artist to create album artwork for me so I taught myself and studied photoshop to create my own. Today I now make passive income from designing artwork for other musicians, streamers, and influencers. I also taught myself how to engineer my own music. I’m still learning but I tell you I sound way better than most artist who spent thousands just for a rough mix.

A great lesson I’ve learned from this journey is that to always bet on you. Never fall for the cons where they say they’re going to offer the world and above. Words can always be used to pretty your dream goal especially when it’s free. But actions will always prove otherwise. Study whomever you decide to work with. Trust your gut feeling EVERY TIME!!! NEVER LOW BALL YOURSELF for 10 seconds of fame.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would definitely bring them to one of my favorite diners West Essex Diner over in Fairfield, NJ. French toast is the best hands down. If it’s in the summer time we will hit Asbury Park. Beach life here is always a vibe as well as bars, good eats, and local art shops. On the weekends, hiking trails are the funnest and a great source for cardio for the day.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Big shoutout to my Soulific Family. They’ve really helped and pushed me to become a greater artist I am today. Being that we are all different and coming from totally opposite backgrounds, music is what brought us all together. No lie we are next up in this industry for sure.

Also, shout outs to my guys ForeverJabron, Stylez, Tundé, Smooth, Elixah. These guys have also made me push above my limits. Showed me a further perspective on how to maneuver with my talent.
