We had the good fortune of connecting with Martha Lorentsen and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi martha, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
I spent many years working as a model, traveling all over the world, but at one point, I decided to pursue a career as an interior designer. This shift not only allowed me to follow my passion for design but also gave me the opportunity to stay closer to home once I became a mom. As a single mom, it’s even more important to find the right balance. My job as a senior interior designer can be very demanding, especially working with high-end clients, but it’s essential to be a great role model for my daughter Sofia and balance family life with my career.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I started my career in the fashion industry as a model, traveling all over the world. At the age of 30, I decided to reinvent myself and pursue a passion that had always been close to my heart—interior design. It wasn’t an easy transition, especially as a single mom, but I was determined to make it work. I studied interior design and began working at Malgosia Design, where I’ve now been for five years as a senior designer.
What sets me apart is my unique combination of experiences—coming from a global fashion background and blending that with my passion for interior design. My approach to design is about creating timeless, functional spaces that truly reflect my clients’ lifestyles, with an eye for both aesthetics and practicality.
I’m most proud of how far I’ve come and the ability to balance my career while being a mom to my daughter, Sofia. I’m excited about all the amazing projects I’ve worked on and those to come, especially our high-end projects in the Malibu , which really let me express my creativity.
The journey has had its challenges, but I’ve learned that perseverance, hard work, and staying true to your vision are key. I’ve also realized the importance of mentorship and support, which is why I’m so grateful to my mentor, Malgosia Migdal.
What I want the world to know is that my story is about reinvention and resilience. it’s never too late to pursue your passions, and that hard work can lead to a fulfilling career.”
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
“For a week-long trip, I would start by taking my best friend to some of my favorite spots around Malibu and the surrounding areas. On the first day, we’d have breakfast at Malibu Farm on the pier, enjoying fresh, farm-to-table food with stunning ocean views. After that, we’d spend the day at Zuma Beach for some sun and relaxation, maybe even surfing if they’re up for it.
Day two, we’d head to Nobu Malibu for a luxurious dinner by the ocean, where you can enjoy incredible sushi and a great atmosphere. The next day, I’d take them on a scenic drive along the Pacific Coast Highway up to Santa Barbara for a day trip. We could explore the Santa Barbara Wine Country and enjoy a relaxing lunch at The Lark, which has amazing farm-to-table dishes.
Mid-week, we’d go for a hike in Topanga State Park, where the trails offer breathtaking views of the mountains and coastline. Then, for dinner, I’d take them to Los Angeles for an amazing dining experience at République or Bestia—two of my favorite spots in town. Both offer incredible food with a vibrant city vibe.
Another day, we’d visit The Getty Villa for some art and culture, followed by lunch at Little Beach House Malibu for a more private, intimate vibe. For a fun night out, we could check out the lively scene at The Bungalow Santa Monica, which has a great social atmosphere with drinks and games. And for the last day, we’d visit Point Dume for a final beach day and maybe even spot some whales if it’s the right season.
This would be a perfect balance of outdoor adventures, great food, and some of the best scenic spots in Malibu and Los Angeles.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d like to give my shoutout to Malgosia Migdal, who has been my mentor for the last five years. I deeply admire and respect her not only for her incredible talent and guidance but also for the way she has helped shape my growth as a designer. Over the years, she’s become not just a mentor, but a dear friend, and I feel very fortunate to have her support and encouragement in my journey.
