We had the good fortune of connecting with Matt Manasse and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Matt, have you ever found yourself in a spot where you had to decide whether to give up or keep going? How did you make the choice?
There is never a choice whether you keep going or not—-that is something that is constant. There will always be new challenges and hurdles to overcome that may cause you to fail. That being said, true failure happens only when you give up. There are times when you must reevaluate certain situations and pivot into something new or leave a situation that is weighing you down. That isn’t quitting though—-that is being smart about focusing your time and energy into things that can make you and those around you happy and successful.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’m a professional pickleball player, coach, and commentator. I have a whole tennis background of playing and coaching collegiately and professionally which has made the transition into pickleball slightly easier. That being said, there have been some tough moments as I moved to LA during a pandemic to navigate this new position. I became known as the Coach to the Stars and it has been a challenge to balance the time demands with being on the court as a coach and player and also chasing certain media opportunities. It’s been 7 days a week coaching for the last 6 months as I’ve gotten busy and that can definitely take its toll. That being said, it’s my passion and I love the sport. It’s the fastest growing sport in the country and it’s my goal to keep it that way.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I love Malibu country Mart, Brentwood Country Mart, and Main St in Santa Monica. I love the Nice Guy on La Cienega as it’s nostalgic for me. Of course I’d spend quite a bit of time playing pickleball at the Riviera Country Club. Have to take them for coffee and a bite at Urth Caffe. Ka’teen and Mother Wolf. Probably some good hikes. Palisades Village. Driving around Beverly Hills is always fun and checking out the Beverly Hills Hotel. Rodeo drive.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to give a major shoutout to my parents. I was thinking the other day about how many times in my life I have been scared or discouraged and they have been there to push me forward and motivate. Without them, I’m not sure where I’d be.
