We had the good fortune of connecting with Matthew Dennis Lewis and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Matthew Dennis, what’s the most important lesson your business/career has taught you?
As an actor, there are many lessons you’ll learn along the way. A few examples are; the flexibility of schedules, dedication to your craft, and understanding of basic set etiquette and work environments. However, the most important lesson that I have learned is patience. The patience to accept the long game, knowing that being a working actor isn’t a flash in the pan phenomenon. You won’t book every audition. That’s okay because there will always be the next role and the next one after that. Find peace in the ebb and flow of success.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
As an actor, your art is literally YOU. I’m proud of the characters I’ve created and the diversity of the roles I’ve achieved. I’m also proud of the resilience I’ve shown myself. It’s definitely not easy, the entertainment industry is an ever-changing beast that requires a lot of sacrifices and hard work. Obviously, there are the side jobs you keep to stay financially afloat, all the hustling to build and maintain relationships but there’s also a balance you have to figure out between work life and personal life. It can be difficult to find time for much-needed vacations or trips home to see family for fear of missing out on busy times, or auditions coming at the moment you reach the airport. That’s why it’s so important to stay in the NOW. Be present, breathe, and take life as it comes with the highest intentions. To me, every role is a new chapter in my story and I’m excited to see where this anthology goes.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Plan a whole week? Oh no, that’s too much stress!! Hahaha! My best friends know that I’m more of a let’s wake up and see where the day takes us. Thankfully in four hours, we could be anywhere from the beach, to Big Bear, or even vegas if we wanted. So there’s plenty of options to keep us busy.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My obvious answer would be my family and friends, and those closest in my life know who they are. (I hope I always give you all the gratitude and appreciation you deserve). When I look deeper into the question, I realize that one of my biggest inspirations is someone I’ve never met and never will. I moved to New York City for aspirations of acting and modeling but found myself deterred by some negative aspects of the industry. I turned my attention to Muay Thai kickboxing and delved into a love for martial arts that I didn’t get a chance to explore growing up. After years of training which led to fighting at a competitive level, there’s no doubt I found an undying love for the sport, but I couldn’t help but feel a sense of longing for the reason I moved to NYC. That’s when I discovered the Starz series, Spartacus. Andy Whitfield’s portrayal of Spartacus reignited a passion within me where I realized I could meld my love of fighting with my former love of acting. Sure enough, my fighting background led to me securing several roles upon moving to Los Angeles.
