We had the good fortune of connecting with May Hui Bugenhagen and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi May Hui, how did you come up with the idea for your business?
As a social person who was hosting parties, poker nights, and BBQs at my house, I was always connecting friends to other friends. When I invite friends out, the philosophy was always “the more the merrier. ” When I turned 30, I was single. I was successful, had a great career, and living a great life. All that was missing was a special someone to share that with. I knew there had to be a better way to meet people and find someone awesome. I tried a dating service and I thought they were horrible. I always knew I can do it better than them. I decided to quit my corporate job and help singles find love!
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My career as a matchmaker started in 2009 when I quit my successful corporate job. I’m the Founder of Two Asian Matchmakers and what sets my company apart is the special attention I give to my clients. I am not looking to be the largest Asian matchmaking company, I want to be the best. I am most proud of the hundreds of successful first dates, which lead to countless marriages I’ve had a hand in. I am most excited about the word of mouth of the company and the referrals I receive weekly from friends, former clients, and colleagues. I always strive for word of mouth advertising. When people are thinking of you and referring their trusted friends to you, you know you’re doing something right! How I got my business to where I am today is from hard work. My recipe for success is simple: I answer my phone. I love talking to clients. I joke around with them. I text them. They check in with me. I enjoy social media. I like staying connected to the people around me.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Come visit Los Angeles! Such a beautiful city. I’m lucky to spend time in California and Colorado for work and play. Join me for drinks at the Terranea Resort in Los Angeles. On another day, we can drive up the coast and grab some lunch overlooking the water at Paradise Cove in Malibu. If you’re coming to visit me in Colorado, let’s take a hike at The Garden of the Gods in Colorado Springs. If you want to get active, let’s trek up the Manitou Incline or hike up Pikes Peak.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
The thought of being in the dating industry and having a career in matchmaking ten years ago was such a novel concept. Though I knew that’s what I wanted to do, I didn’t know how to go about it. I came across Matchmaking Institute of New York online and quickly read up on it. I signed up, got on a plane, and learned from other professional matchmakers. What a great starting point for a lucrative career. They teach you everything you need to know to excel in the business and the rest if up to you to learn from other colleagues and peers. Once I got deeper in the business, I learned about Matchmakers Alliance, another organization where you connect with other dating professionals. Wow. My mind was blown with how helpful people in the industry can be when you need help. Having been involved with these two amazing organizations has taken my career to a whole other level…I’m a certified matchmaker, certified dating coach, and well-respected leader in the Asian niche community.
