We had the good fortune of connecting with Maya Gwynn and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Maya, what makes you happy? Why?
Over the past couple of years, there have been so many situations that have forced me to slow down and appreciate things I used to take for granted. I would say those are the things that make me the happiest now. The small stuff. Sharing funny videos with friends, walking around my neighborhood, and random acts of kindness from strangers. I feel so blessed for my friends & family who continue to support me. They make me so happy and make my life beautiful everyday.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I just started directing my own work! It’s been an incredible experience to tap into a different part of my creativity. I told myself by the time I turned 30 I just wanted to direct one thing! I’ll be 30 in two months and I’m on my 5th project! Only up from here.

The project that I’m most proud of to date is a video I directed about black women discussing mental health titled “Black Women should never humble themselves”. I came up with the concept for the video after being frustrated that it never felt as if there was ever any safe spaces for black women to discuss their feelings. I asked my cousin and two friends if they wanted to be apart of it, and they all enthusiastically agreed. After the release of the video one of my favorite people to watch and someone I truly admire, Jackie Aina shared the video to her followers and because of that it went viral. I felt so honored and touched that Jackie shared the video, but also it was getting such a positive response from most importantly, other black women. This took place over two months ago and I’m still soaking it all in. I can’t wait to make more content that hopefully connects with people in the same way.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
