Meet Mayra Martinez | Photographer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Mayra Martinez and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Mayra, let’s start by talking about what inspires you?
I’m inspired by my mother and my younger siblings—we’ve all walked through challenges and still show up every day striving to do and be better. That drive lives in me now as a wife and mom. My husband and my daughters inspire me daily to grow, to show up fully, and to live with intention. Everything I do—especially through photography—is rooted in love for them and a deep appreciation for the beauty in everyday life.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My love for photography started in junior high. I always had a camera in my pocket and was the one taking photos of all my friends. In high school, I became a photographer for our yearbook, and in college, I worked for the school newspaper while majoring in photography. It’s always been part of me. After graduating in 2013, I was fortunate to be connected with Matt Roberts and Phil Van Nostrand, who mentored me and helped open the door to the wedding industry. From there, I slowly started building my own clientele and officially went full-time in June 2019—just months before the pandemic hit.
It definitely hasn’t been an easy road. I’ve had to learn so much—not just about photography, but about business, confidence, and trusting my voice. I’ve struggled with indecisiveness and self-doubt, especially in such a competitive field where it’s easy to compare yourself to others. But I’ve learned that the key to standing out is to truly know who you are and lead with authenticity.
Becoming a wife and a mom has deepened my connection to my work in ways I never expected. Now, I don’t just take pretty photos—I document love, legacy, and the kinds of moments that matter for a lifetime. I understand the emotional weight of a single image. That shift has helped me connect with my clients on a deeper level and create with more purpose.
What I want the world to know about my story is this: I didn’t just stumble into photography—I’ve been chasing this dream since I was a kid. I’ve had to fight through doubt, take risks, and learn to believe in myself. But it’s all been worth it to do work that feels meaningful and create something lasting for people. My brand is about heart, connection, and celebrating love in all its beautiful forms.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my best friend was visiting for a week, I’d give them a little taste of life here in Carpinteria and nearby Santa Barbara. Carp is a small, cozy beach town just minutes from SB, and it’s full of charm. We’d start the trip with coffee at one of my favorite spots—either Brass Bird or Little Heart Cafecito at the Santa Barbara Public Market. Then we’d kick things off with a full beach day, soaking up the sun and relaxing by the ocean.
Wine tasting in the Funk Zone is a must—there’s such a great energy there with all the art, music, and tucked-away spots to explore. I’d take them shopping at some local boutiques, and we’d definitely stop by the Mujeres Makers Market to support some amazing women-owned small businesses.
We’d have a picnic at the Santa Barbara Mission and walk through the rose garden, then catch sunset views from the courthouse tower or go explore the historic Presidio. I love mixing in a little history and beauty.
As for food—Sushi is a go-to. Anywhere with good vibes and a good view is a win in my book. We’d also hit up the farmers market to grab fresh local goodies and maybe cook a meal at home one night.
Overall, I’d want them to experience the heart of this area—its warmth, creativity, natural beauty, and community. There’s just something about this place that makes you feel connected—to nature, to people, and to the moment.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Absolutely. I want to give a huge shoutout to Matt Roberts and Phil Van Nostrand—two incredibly talented photographers who believed in me from the very beginning. I had the honor of assisting them and editing for them early on in my journey, and their encouragement truly lit the fire for me to pursue photography as more than just a dream. They not only taught me the technical side of the craft, but also showed me the beauty of storytelling through a lens. Being mentored by them was a gift, and I’m forever grateful for the opportunities and inspiration they gave me. Even now, they continue to stay connected—through social media, referrals, and always being there with tips and advice whenever I reach out. That kind of generosity and support means the world
