We had the good fortune of connecting with Meagan Broy and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Meagan, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I’ve always been entrepreneurial for as long as I can remember. Even as a kid and teen, I would start neighborhood clubs and create small businesses to earn my own money. Both of my parents are immigrants from Mexico and Peru, and they instilled in me and my siblings the belief that we could achieve anything we wanted through hard work and education. My father, who has been a business owner for over 25 years, particularly inspired me to start my own business. I have had the pleasure to learn and shadow him. His entrepreneurial spirit has always inspired me.
When I decided to start my own real business, I knew it had to be something I was passionate about and believed in wholeheartedly. I’ve struggled with various skin conditions ( e.g Acne, Rosacea, Ezema, and Hyperpigmentation) for nearly two decades, and through countless dermatologist visits and extensive research, I noticed a lack of education around skincare ingredients in the industry. I was tired of buying products with pretty packaging and mediocre formulations that didn’t work for me, and I wanted to change that.
That’s when I started Meaga Glow in April 2021. Our mission is to educate consumers on ingredients and formulations to help their unique skin thrive. We offer proprietary formulations and clinical testing, as well as customized regimens based on a thorough skin evaluation to understand each individual’s goals and needs. This is something I haven’t seen done before outside of a medical office, and I’m proud to offer this program to our customers.
Getting started was easy, but I quickly learned that the day-to-day and the long nights are what set apart successful businesses. I do all the work it takes to run my business, but I know that my current knowledge has to grow so my business can. I’ve taken online courses on liquid coding, marketing, ecommerce, and skin science/education courses to help build my knowledge base. Understanding what and why things sell and how your marketing has an impact on those sales has been a significant learning lesson for me. As a “do-it-yourself” kind of person, I take lots of pride in saying, “yep, I did that!” However, I’ve also learned that it’s important to know when to call it quits and ask for help.
I have to admit that the marketing aspect of my business has been the most challenging part, and it’s been a humbling experience. Marketing encompasses everything from web design and branding to SEO and content creation. It’s not just about posting social media stories or running Facebook ads. It involves telling your brand’s story through every aspect of your online presence. It has been a fun and challenging experience, and it has also been the most expensive part of running my business. But, I know that social media and marketing are crucial for a business to succeed in 2023. So, if you are going to prioritize a big budget for your business, spend it on a marketing team (or freelancer – if you are a freelance marketing guru hit my line haha) !
Running a business in the skincare industry can be challenging, especially when there is so much to learn. From the chemistry to how products react, the impacts of mixing ingredients, and then the marketing of presenting that verbiage in a way that the consumer understands, it can be overwhelming. My biggest takeaway for anyone thinking about starting their own business is to know when to ask for help, know when to hire help, and to leave it for tomorrow when necessary.
It’s been an exciting journey so far, and I look forward to growing and expanding Meaga Glow in the future.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Absolutely! My business is called Meaga Glow. We are a Latina woman owned business! Meaga Glow specialize in providing high-quality skincare products with clinically tested formulations and provide personalized regimens based on each customer’s unique skin type and goals. I started this business because I’ve struggled with various skin conditions ( e.g Acne, Rosacea, Ezema, and Hyperpigmentation) for nearly 20 years and noticed a lack of education of ingredients and usage in the skincare industry. I was tired being overwhelmed with the number of products I was using and buying ( both from Sephora and the pharmacy) to fix my skin and not knowing why they weren’t working. So, I decided to create a business that not only offers effective and clinically tested formulations but also educates customers on the ingredients and formulations that work best for their skin.
What sets us apart is our focus on education + our fully customizable regimes – we believe that our customers should have a good understanding of the products and ingredients they are using. And, be fully informed on how it works for their individual skin concerns. That’s why we invest a lot of time in creating educational content for our website and social media, such as newsletters and articles that explain how our products work, what ingredients we use and why, and how to use our products effectively. We work closely with our product formulators to ensure that we are providing the best possible products to our customers, without relying on fancy packaging or marketing gimmicks. Our goal is to empower our customers to take control of their skincare routines, and to feel confident in the products they are using on their skin.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I live in La Verne CA. Pretty central to the beach, mountains, Los Angeles, and about 2 hours from palm springs. One my favorite places to indulge in self care is in Palm Springs. From the scenery, the vibe, the architecture…. I just looove palm springs!
Whenever a friend comes to visit I love to recommend getting a sound bath. It’s literally one of my favorite self care activities and I try to schedule one myself at least 1x a month. Integratron in Landers is one of my favorites. You leave feeling so energized, relaxed, and sometimes feeling like you traveled to another dimension haha.
Salsa’s is a Mexican restaurant in Cathedral City. Its a hidden gem out of the downtown Palm Springs area. They have THE BEST TACOS and incredible service.
A little more upscale dinner The Pink Cabana! As a gluten free and non-alcohol drinking person this place has an incredible menu and mocktail list!
Perfect Pint is my favorite frozen custard bar. Not a lot of places to get goood custard around here ( that I know of and if you do know please share!!! ) I always make sure to stop here for a tasty treat.
Pilates Palm Spring is one of my favorite studios to visit! Their classes follow the Joseph Pilates reformer methods so you get that very classical session in!
Oasis Golf Resort is a very fun and beginner friendly 3 par course with great lunch options.
Lastly, a self care weekend is not complete without a facial. I personalllyyy would head back to La Verne and visit Deb (@djskincarestudio) ! Not only will she give you a Meaga Glow Facial but she truly is the best in the GAME.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My parents play an infinite role in my successes. They have pushed me, supported me, and inspired me my entire life. I am regularly inspired by my parents work ethic and dedication to successfully deliver and inspire others. My husband Brendon has also been instrumental in encouraging me to pursue entrepreneurship, starting with small projects that he supported me in, eventually leading to the creation of Meaga Glow. And of course, my amazing friends. Who constantly cheer for me and support be by buying from MG and posting and sharing about my brand!
