We had the good fortune of connecting with Megan Weeks and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Megan, how do you think about risk?
Risk taking and being ok with failing is essential for entrepreneurs!
I remember when I first thought of quitting my 9 to 5 job to pursue my passion I was overwhelmed with”what if’s” and fear. However, if it was not for taking the risk, preparing for any outcome, and overall trusting myself, I would have stayed in a stagnant place for a very long time.
I dedicate all of my growth and success to not being afraid of trying new things. I am the type of person that when I get a business or creative idea in my head, I do everything in my power to see it through and make it happen, despite what the result may be. This mindset of being a risk taker and appreciating the failures as much as the successes has allowed me to show up authentically and understand myself and my skillsets even better.
Taking risks and being fearless with new ventures in life has not only played a huge role in my graphic design business but also in my everyday life. One of the toughest parts of being a business owner is making sure to find the right work/life balance. When I started to apply the mindset of “just going for it”, in my real life, that is when I connected with new friends, found new passions and felt true happiness.
It is very easy to get comfortable in life. Trust me, I have been there. It took my over 3 years to finally take the risk into owning a business. I was comfortable at my last job, I was able to work from home, I got a consistent pay check and for the most part, I knew what to expect every month. However, that sort of comfortability was not good for my type of personality. I craved change. I craved working on exciting projects. And ultimately I craved being challenged. That is when I understood deep down inside that taking the risk was so worth it for my overall happiness.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Back in 2016 I graduated from college with a BA in visual communications but if I am being 100% honest, everything I do today is self taught or learned from experiences. When I entered the real world and discovered career choices I was fearless to saying yes to opportunity. My first career started at a marketing agency where I learned how to project manage and that was my first introduction to logo and web design. Looking back it was truly a matter of right place, right time. The company ended up going under and I was forced to find a new position. After dabbling with becoming a personal trainer or nutritionist, I was always led back to graphic design. I worked at a few other places but always lacked the creative freedom I craved so badly. No matter where I worked, I always had a freelance graphic design business on the side. Balancing a full time job and freelance was a lot but so worth it. I was able to plan and prepare to leave my job and start my own graphic design business. I definitely was scared to quit and to be on my own, but I knew that my proactiveness and passion for this industry would get me through anything! I learned that you have to quiet all the voices around you and truly listen to what will make you the most happy. Visualize your dream day and you will be one step closer to manifesting it!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I live in Reno, Nevada so I would definitely take my friends to all the fun coffee shops here!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I am so grateful for the amazing support I have from my boyfriend, Samar. He has been with me for the past 6 years and has seen the ups and downs in my life and business. Throughout it all he reminded me of my power and he is the logic I need for my emotional side. If it was not for him reminding me of my “why” and my vision whenever the doubts kicked in, I may not have been able to see past those limiting beliefs.
