We had the good fortune of connecting with Melissa Gutierrez Clavijo and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Melissa, what is the most important factor behind your success?
I believe it’s a mix of factors: determination, focus, and the ability to adapt easily to circumstances. If we’re talking Melissa the Film Producer, I would say my determination to pursuit this purpose and calling I’ve felt from when I was a little girl to tell stories no one else has told before; but also focus has been determinant, been able to sacrifice countless sleepless nights, weekends, living far from my family, all to become who I am today. As to Narrative Ads where I lead the production team, I also feel we’ve reached a level of “success” because me and my team we’ve been able to adapt, we’ve been able to innovate, and we’ve been able to develop new methods of production through countless testings of multiple models (to the best of our core of AB testing), both in content creation and in the internal management of the company. After COVID, we can see a clear before and after for Narrative Ads thanks mostly to our focus, and adaptability to whole new challenges – by adapting to new methods of filming remotely not only were we able to survive through COVID as a business, but we were able to grow our portfolio of clients exponentially.
Please tell us more about your work. We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about. How did you get to where you are today professionally. Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges? What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way. What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
I believe what sets me apart is my ability to leave with ease my comfort zone and finding the best reward on the other end of the road. When I was in Colombia I had a lot of success producing commercials for some of the biggest brands in the country, yet I decided to leave everything behind and fly to New York and later L.A. to pursuit my MFA in Producing because I wanted to expand my knowledge, I knew there had to be more on the other side of where I was already comfortable. The first few years were not easy, they were hard, but now I feel absolutely happy leading the creative team at Narrative Ads, where truly creativity is our engine. At Narrative we produced on a slow week 1,000 weekly ads, the upkeep of this continued feat demands a lot of resourcefulness, experience, and creativity, and I feel eternally grateful to have been one of the pioneers of the company and to now see it growing, and prospering after all the hard work.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I most confess I love a good view, so I have to say I’d start at the Griffith Observatory, it’s just a place you must go, from here you can also get a pretty good view of the Hollywood Sign and behind you… the whole city of angels beneath your feet. After Griffith, we’d head over to the other side of the city to Malibu, we would sit for brunch at Malibu Cafe, and after we would head down to El Matador Beach, and end the day with the perfect sunset gazing and enjoy dinner as the night falls at Geoffrey’s Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I might sound cliché but I have to say my mother, and all the women I grew surrounded by. I had the fortune to be raised by a single mother who taught me how to work hard, to sacrifice everything to move into where you want to be. If anyone needs recognition because of their labor and me being where I am today it has to be her, she led me here by example. I saw her working day in and day out, weekends, and holidays non-stop, all to become the best at her job, and she did, because of her determination.
